I need to familiarize myself with the AK47 rifle system, for professional and training use. What AK variant on the U.S. market most resembles the AK's encountered outside CONUS? I need a good quality example that I can train with. The AR I'm putting together is an LMT M4gery. The pistol, a Glock 19. These weapons represent the the firearms most often encountered in today's military/security environment. Please no trolling/arguing, just some professional advise ref. the AK variant. Thank's, Ray

WASR is a sound AKM clone.

if you can find an SAR-1 in the EE with a threaded barrel/lug. That would be your best bet, these can usually be had for around $350-$400 and are the closest to the real thing for this price range.

Other than than you could get a Arsenal Inc. Rifle for around $800 if you want to go that high. These rifles are made on a true bulgarian receiver with a finish that is the closest to the russian enamel...only its better because it is more durable.

OR...if you let us know where you live. You can probably go shoot some of the rifles that some of the guys have. About 5 minutes with the rifle and you will be able to operate it with no problems.

Msokol13, I live in Dallas, Texas. I have fired the AK47 here and there. I'll be needing one for some intensive upcoming training. I know you get what you pay for. What I need is a reliable AK that I'll be able to utilize to become proficient with the AK weapons system most often encountered outside CONUS. The "Average" AK47. Thanks, Ray

Well, but what is an "average" AK? Every country of manufacture has a few quirks and differences. Some receivers have mag dimples, some don't. Finish varies from factory to factory, as does furniture choice and a number of other things. I will 2nd the WASR vote; I've handled and shot one, and seems to be fairly "average" and they are cheap. Maadis are decent AKM clones, Romanians, Chinese, etc. etc. are all good. As for reliability, any AK will work. The only jam I ever had was when a case from very cheap ammo separated slightly and wedged in the bolt/carrier assembly. To clear it, I just yanked back on the charging handle harder than usual, and it was back up and running. It was the ammo's fault entirely. There are guys here who never clean their AKs and they keep going. Don't worry about if failing. Good luck in your search.

Get a Romanian and a Tapco fcg to replace the cheesy Century parts. I've beaten mine for 5 years and smoked the handguards numerous times, and it still gets 4moa.

Amen to that. My WASR just needed a G2 fcg to cure the trigger slap and a little adjustment to the front sight pin to compensate for the canted front sight block and it hits like a hammer. VERY reliable. I've filled the thing with sand and dirt while driving along dirt roads in the back of a pick-up truck for hours and hours while hog hunting and it has NEVER failed to feed or failed to fire.

You absolutely cannot beat it for the price!

There is usually a very good selection at the Dallas Market Hall show, which is coming up...maybe even this weekend. Check into it. That's just about the best show I've been to in Texas, certainly in Dallas. Probably more AKs there than any other rifle type.
