OK fellas, I have been wanting somthing a bit different for my next toy and so I have decided that I would like to have a AK 103 clone.  What is the best route to to attack this problem??
I want a folding Bulgarian polly stock,(Tantal??) and the shorter barrell with a extended compensator.  Should I have a AK smith cut and crown the barrell and then install a 103 type FSB??  Should I get a 74 kit to start it all off and go from there??  What do you think that this little project will cost?? any help will be appreciated...

If you are going to use the shorter barrel with the combo FSB/gas block and krink cone suppressor then it will be an AK-104.

Similiar to this:

A 103 is a 7.62 so I wouldn't start with a 74 kit. There are many options to attack it although if you are going to go with the shorter barrel (104) then you would need to have the barrel cut and crowned and install the combo FSB/GB (k-var) and the extended brake from Chris at Ak103.com
To do it right the polymer folding stock is actually Russian and the only places to get those are Tantal and Rusmilitary.(both out of stock currently, get on the back order list from Rusmilitary, Tantal is supposed to have them coming)  I think K-var may actually have some folding Russian skeleton stock kits available although a phone call is in order (web site shows out of stock)
You could start with a Saiga and convert it (lots of work, no mag dimples), you could get a Romy kit (coming soon) and a  US receiver and build it up with plastic handguards. I am going that route to compliment my AK105andAK101 . I will do the actual 103 and change the GB to the 90* and the FSB.
Anyway you go it's not cheap.

How hard is it to install one of those folding stocks like tantal sells??. I would like to put one on my Saiga 103 conversion.

Hey Kevin, how will the 90 degree gas block work with a barrel that is cut for the 45 degree block?

Ak-103 or AK-104? You mention AK103 but you describe Ak104. in either case probably the best way to go is to get a Saiga in 762x39mm and good luck in getting the side folder even from tantal...these things are very hard to find now. Once you find it you can send it to Chris at AK-USA and he'll take over. He has all the necessary parts to do the conversion except for the plastic side folder, that you probably will have to get yourself. Yes, others can do this for you as well, but.... I think I better just show you my 103 as built by Chris:

Heres my AK105.  I have a AK104 thats identical, but I forgot to get a shot of the two together.  Same stocks/brakes.  You can see the differene between that sweet 103 and the 104/5.

I am no AK gas system expert but it's just a hole in the barrel. My only concern is the outside diameter. I guess I could measure the Romy I have compared to the Bulgy, but  I am  too lazy this evening to get them out.

Jake, the cuts required for the folder are not too complex really, just a matter of getting the nerve to cut a perfectly good receiver. Here's an idea of whats needed front, rear
Here's the template if you need ittemplate
It's also neccessary to drill the trunion for the front  retainer pin

You can't just swap a 45 with a 90 degree without plugging and re-drilling the gas port.

I would not even do this, get a new barrel instead...best option in my humble opinion is get a saiga and start from there.

Owww, I don't think I want to cut on my baby the finish is far too sweet to mess up, I guess you'd have to make those cuts for the skeleton frame buttstocks too huh??

If you have a russian AK100 or triangle, they use the same rear equipment.  Bulgarians dont work with russian though.
