I'm finish up the final touches on my new AK and I'm having trouble with the selector switch that came with the kit. I know that I have to file it down a  little, but I'm not sure how much.

I've gotten it to the point where I can get it past the disconnector, but it still gets caught up on the rear end of the trigger where the hammer wire rests and it will not go all the way down. Do I keep filing until I get it past this?

ETA: Nevermind. I got it. Now for this cursed Shepards hook

The trigger part is where the safety does its job. Ideally, with the safety on, you want as little travel as possible in the trigger when pressed. If there is too much clearance, your trigger will move quite a bit, and eventually cause a safety concern (especially after several thousand rounds when things break in and possibly wear a bit, you could end up with more play than when you built it...).

So, as you have done, start by getting it to clear the disconnector, then you just have to file a little at a time until it sits nicely over the trigger part.

This is actually very critical, and should be done very carefully. Take your time, and if you take off too much material, you need a new one...or you have to add material to it and re-grind it.

I had an AMD kit that had a bent safety. It was pretty hard metal, so I annealed it and bent it back into place. Still was too sloppy, so I welded a bead on the end, ground it back down to the right spot, and re-heat treated it. Works perfeclty now.

Thanks for the advice. I got it to where it's a nice tight fit with not movement on the trigger part, but still moves freely.

I am having trouble with the hook thing now. I know there is a site with good instructions but can't find it now. Any help?

I can't find that tutorial either and a search came up dry...

Basically, put the hook part over the hammer pin, then push it under the trigger pin toward the rear. The curve on the long part should put upward pressure on the trigger pin, and with the hook part seated all the way on the hammer pin, both should stay put.

I have been meaning to try out the plate retainer thing from Blackjack...or make one. That makes all the more sense than fumbling with a wire spring.

Good feeling getting that safety in perfectly, right??

Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for. I really needed the visual to get it right. Now I can finally say 'I'm freakin done!!'. Took me like 6 months to finish it. Now I just need to get out and blast this badboy. Thanks for the help.
