can someone give me a good explanation on how it works?

sure...

shooter pulls trigger.

pressure builds in microseconds as the explosion of the propellant drives the bullet down the barrel.

the pressurized and expanding gases travelling forward behind the projectile get a metered amount bled off as the gas rushes to establish equilibrium by escaping through both the muzzle and the gas tap hole that is located under the gas block.

the hot gases fill the gas chamber just ahead of the gas piston, pressurizing the space it find there.

as the gases continue to rush into the gas chamber and the pressure rises, the gas piston is driven rearward.

as soon as the piston is energized and travelling rearwards (at great speed), the gas vents in the gas tube or gas bklock are exsposed...allowing the pressure to drop in the system and allowing the gas piston to quickly return forward.

Great explanation Campy. Here's a visual aid if needed. Warning for dial up, it's a little over 2 megs.

Thnaks Campy for the explanation, and the video, I was pretty sure that was how it worked but on some gas blocks it doesnt look as if the gas could get to the piston.
