Just got back from a local gun shop, the location I will be purchasing a MAK 90 from within a couple weeks.  They have three available, I checked the diameter of all three muzzles.  Each came out to right about .505".  It is my understanding that would be too small to thread to 14x1mm LH, correct?

I would have to thread them to 1/2x28, then use an adapter to mount a 24x1.5 flash hider - yes?

None of them had retainer pin holes in the FSB either.  Would it be okay to mount a FH using red loctite?

yup. .505" is way too small for 14mm.

you can do a 1/2"-28 tpi thread, though and the adapter will work fine.

Okay - picked up my MAK 90 now - bought it FTF from a guy locally instead of one of the ones at the store.  I haven't measured the muzzle yet to verify diameter, but I can still see the original turning marks - it should be large enough to thread at 14x1m LH (will check it soon).

Question though - the FSB is not drilled for a retention pin/spring (or if it was, is been welded over and ground down).  Since I plan on installing a FH - should I see about getting it drilled?  Or will red loctite work to secure the FH?

As long as you've got threads, loc-tite is fine. I've always found that the blue is sufficient to keep my muzzle attachments indexed properly and nice and tight.
