With a freakin' bayonet no less! Sir, you kick all kinds of ass. Still well out of my price range, but I'm gonna have to save up for a G3. Or take out a "student loan" to cover "school related expenses" and buy a 51B. I mean, I might need that for a history class. Guns are historical. |

todd, interesting piece.........hk sear guys will have a definite interest in an entry level belt feed, but affordability will be the catchword. technically, could the barrel be cut back to a 15.5 w/ permanent flash supp for a g3k look? i think a shorter barrel will 1) tame some recoil out of the 308, and 2) also you could turn down the end enough to run a true triple frame and still preserve the free float (the front site base hanging over the handguard looks a little odd). i like the bipod location, and it seems the right height to keep the belt box off the ground in a variety of ground levels/angles. do you run a trunion extension to get the hg fwd? |
| well i love the idea, but for most people 4-5000 is hard to come by, not saying they are not worth it, if i had it i would be all over it. But its almost as much as a used car, i think if a belt fed reciever, for any weapon could be produced for no more than 2500, you would make a killing! people can attain that much easier than 4 or 5000, this way you can just pick up the rest of the parts when the funds are availible, if i come into a few thousand dollars you will be the first to know, but untill then, i think ill just put toghether MP5's and AR's |

G3's already have a free-floated barrel. The barrel and front sight assembly is NOT attached to either the cocking tube, or the handguard. What's the point of attaching the front sight to the cocking tube????????? I don't get it. Why would you not attach it to the barrel (fairly stiff) and instead attach it to the cocking tube (anything but stiff)????? |

Guys, The G3 tooling will get put to use the first quarter of next year round about. I expect rec to be in the $200 or less catagory. Also a G3 brl is not free floated. I tried correcting Buddy over there at Sturm but AOL guys are banned again. Anything touching the brl can hinder accuracy. You have sling attach, you also have the cocking tube which the carrier is running back and forth in and can slap the front sight post which is attached to the brl. Why do you think Hk would do a PSG1 the same way I did this (minus a PSG1 brl ext for the longer, and heavier brl)? Todd@ORF |

Todd, I know you've built more HK rifles than I'll probably ever even see in my life. But you need to look closely on this one. The G3 cocking tube is not attached to the barrel. The end of the cocking tube can move around inside the middle hole of the triple frame, because it's not attached. That's free floating. PSG1's have the handguard attached to the cocking tube...so does a G3. The MSG90A1 has a front sight like yours, but it's a just a BUIS. PSG1's don't even have a front sight. Using a sling on the usual front attachment point will un-freefloat the barrel, I agree. If you're worried about the cocking tube "slapping" the front sight...you ought to be more worried about the front sight being attached to the flimsy cocking tube, with the carrier running around in there. Do you expect the front sight to hold zero better attached to the cocking tube, than to the barrel? I sure don't. The opening at the end of the PSG1 handguard is awful close to the barrel...don't you think that if HK was concerned about the cocking tube moving around and slapping things, they would have given it a little more clearance? The way you put it, it would be impossible to freefloat an AR15 barrel, because there is "something" (gas block) attached to the barrel, even though the handguard doesn't touch it. |

Sig, Email Hk and see what they have to say. The PSG1 forearm (a real Hk PSG1) has about .030-.040 at the smallest point (bottom side) clearance, thats actually alot. Most C tubes are rarely perfectly straight, and some do touch the tripple tree (most FMPs rec that were brought in with tubes attached are worst example) IMHO anything attached to a brl hinders maximum brl performance, harmonics etc. Todd@ORF |
