this is my 1st time on the red side of the site, so forgive my stoopidity.

i've got a romanian post ban 47 with wood furniture.  it's the only ak i've had any extensive exposure to.

i'd like to put some sort of folding stock on it.  please advise as to:
    1.  legality
    2.  side vs. under
    3.  how much of a pain in the ass is it?
    4.  cost.  if i can't do it myself, how much is a smith gonna charge?  where do i get the parts/work done?

eventually i'd like to put a russian style 47 or 74 brake on it.  legal issues?

thanks

Go with the Romanian Sidefolder....it bolts right on and takes ten minutes to install. Once the AWB goes away here in 4 days, on Monday, you'll be able to slap it right on. It'll be legal then. The side folder is a bit more comfortable than the underfolder. They both don't provide that great of a cheek weld.

1. legality

after the awb sunsets, you can add a functional folder. for now, it must be permanently disabled from folding.

2. side vs. under

unless you are talking about a russian/bulgarian polymer side folder, they are all uncomfortable for me to shoot. the single strut wire side folders are particularly usuless in my opinion.

3. how much of a pain in the ass is it?

the wire folders bolt right on...a 10 minute job. the underfolders require a trunnion swap and receiver machining. the left side folders all require major receiver work and a trunnion swap.

4. cost. if i can't do it myself, how much is a smith gonna charge? where do i get the parts/work done?

the right side folding wire stocks you can do easily at home. anything else requires finesse and some tooling.

eventually i'd like to put a russian style 47 or 74 brake on it. legal issues?

it is entirely legal to add a brake now, as long as you do it with an american made brake or add one american made part to your rifle if you decide to use an imported muzzle device. if you thread the muzzle, you must permanently attach the muzzle device.

after the awb sunsets, adding a loose threaded flash suppressor becomes an option.
