Okay guys, I am going to be getting my first AK.  I am contemplating building a Bulgarian 74, but I am slightly hesitant because of the caliber.  From what I can tell, currently the only 5.45x39 in the country is either Barunal or Wolf.  My worry is that supply might dry up in the future or become very expensive.  I don't see much in the way of reloading componenets available for the caliber either.  I would hate to get the rifle and have to pay out the nose for ammo in the future.  Am I worrying about nothing here?

Yes.  Just stock up now while it is cheap.

If 5,45 disapears, very likely the 7,62 munitions will too.

Even though there is domestic production of 7,62, the price would still be prohibitivly high.

I think either weapon would be fine.   Munitions are inexpensive now, so I would buy as much as i could at this time.

+1 on buying all you can afford now.

Cheaper Than Dirt is selling Wolf 7.62 Soviet 122gr fmj for like $50/ 500 in a USGI ammo can.  25 boxes of 20 rds.  Takes care of your long term storage too.  Some might throw a dessicant pack in there too.

I just ordered a Saiga 20" 7.62 Soviet and will pick it up when I hit the house next week.  I plan on getting probably around 2,000-3,000 rounds inventory.  Since this will work with an SKS too.

Don't worry about the Wolf ammo.  Fine stuff.  Yeah, it's not Federal Premium.  But when you need it, it'll be there.

wolf, barnaul, ulyhevsk and the brown/silver/chartruese bear stuff, but yes...primarily russian ammunition is what is on the market.

5.45 is also manufactured by dynomit nobel/rws and imported in small lots.

i am pretty sure lapua manufactures or repackages 5.45, but i am not sure if it is imported.

since i am still shooting 1940's turkish 8mm, i'm reasonably sure there will be 5.45 for the rest of my lifetime.

My Bulgy 74 is my fave out of 13 calibers on hand, so just get one. If 5.45 dries up from there, it'll start up over here or you'll still have your ARs.
Or get a 5.56 AK instead.

I never had any trouble with getting 5.45, just that it's not a popular caliber, I usually get cases shipped to me from J&G, they always have it in stock....
