| Are 5.45 and 7.62 parts, particularly bolt carrier, interchangeable? Thanks for any information. |
|
Some are, some aren't. Some 47 bolt carriers are small hole most others are large. By that I mean the I.D. of the hole where the bolt rides. All the 74 carriers I have seen are smaller in diameter. The gas pistons on 47 bolt carriers are slightly longer too. This normally isn't a problem, though. Mike |

in addition to what mike said, the bolt carrier of the ak-74 is also lighter than the bolt carrier used in the ak-47 and akm. the mass was re-balanced to match the timing curve of the new 5.45 cartridge. i would not advise swapping bolt carriers from different calibres even in those instances the bolt stem sizes match. |
I'll be damned! Learn something new every day. Thanks Campy! Mike |

mike...i'll let you in on a secret! heheheh! i know a guy that built a postie and is running an ak-74 bolt in a 7.62 with no problems. i really don't think much would be encountered, function-wise. he's expirienced enough to know what to look for (as are you!) now, so poor newb might read a discussion board and go cram some oddball parts combo together and come screaming back to be when: a. his mis-mastched carrier battered his rivets loose. b. short-stroking so bad that he replaced every part BUT the carrier. c. bolt stem marks tattoo'd into his forehead! lol! seriously, i have never weighed the two to determine the difference, but the '74 carrier has two longitudinal holes running from the rear of the carrier towards the front. the ak-74/akm carrier lacks these mass-reducing features. |

Don't mean to hijack, but since the question is pretty much answered... how about milled 7.62 bolts in stamped recievers? I'm looking for a replacement for the one in my SAR, since the gas piston is bent to one side causing it to grind for a small portion of its movement. It would also be nice to ditch all the excessive machining marks while I'm at it. |
