My first AK question . On the left side of the reciever are two half circle  " thingies "   with grooves , etc.  Is this some kind of weird scope mount ? ( It's a SAR-1 ) Yeah I know it's a poor description but what the hell . Ya'll know what I'm talking about .

yes. it is an optic mounting rail. it accepts the quick-detach com-bloc optics...most of which are of quite nice quality.

And let me add this. In my worthless opinion, it's the best optic mounting sys. of any of my firearms.mmk

Ditto on the above and congratulations on your purchase!. You won't regret it. To see what the scopes and mounts look like check out Tantal or K-Var's sites.

drew5337 - What kind of pistol grip is that on your AK, and where did you get it??? I think I'd like that one alot more than the one that's currently on my SAR-1...

Drew , how does that sight moubt to the reciever ?

not drew, but...

first, the kobra and it's mount are an integral unit (with the exception of the weaver rail type kobra, which is not pertinant to this discussion).

the kobra slides onto the dovetail on the optic rail from the rear of the rifle, towards the front.

after sliding the kobra all the way forward to the travel stop, a locking lever is thrown 180° to lock it in place.

mere child's play!

all russian military type optics, whether it be a daysight (telescopic), night vision, infrared illuminator or autocollimating ("red-dot, like the kobra) can be interchanged in about 10 seconds time. the optics usually return to their previous zero point pretty darn close or spot-on.

I am going to have to loctite the screws a little bit, but the thing does come back to zero every time.  I love it.  And the Ergo grip is only about a thousand times better than the regular grip :)

Is there a chance that somebody could show me a left-side view of the kobra and it's mount . Also , where could I purchase this set up ?
Thanks

Purchase your Kobra or other Russian optics here:

Here is a close up of the mounted Kobra.

Hmm, just read that the plant that makes the Kobra sight is shut down for the moment.  Look for a used one or check out some of their other models, they have one that looks alot like an Aimpoint that I am thinking about for the SEAK.
