I was watching video on CNN of Iraqis firing their Kalishnikovs into the air "in celebration of Saddam's capture"...I don't know if anyone else saw this...but the guns kept jamming! Every three or four rounds on full auto, the operators had to clear a jam. Just thought that was interesting.

I seriously doubt their AKs' have ever been cleaned and lubed. Their idea of "cleaning" would be to sand the finish off the outside so the bare metal was "nice and shiny". Don't even enquire about cleaning the gas system and the gas hole in the barrel!!! That they were getting a few rounds off isn't bad. I remember watching (on the news) a kid in Somalia hand cycle his AK for every shot. "Cleaning? We dun't need no stinkin' cleaning".

Ditto what John2 said!  I once bought a preban Hungarian that was so filthy it was difficult to cycle by hand.  After an extensive cleanup it came in around 95% condition and ran like a champ.  Apparently the owner didn't think you needed to clean an AK.  Since it was so filthy I got it for several hundred less than the going rate at the time!

Although none of my personal AK's have ever jammed, I read stuff on this site that makes AK's seem supernatural! I'll bet they're mags were "sandy"...and the AK laying in the jungle by the dead Vietnamese for a year...??? Blah Blah Blah...sorry. We must separate the myth from the mechanical device.

a friend of my wife's cousin told me he was told by a spec ops dude that was in gawddamnistan when a navy seal told him about an ak he had heard of jamming.

if there EVER was a more reliable rifle than the kalashnikov...i sure as hell would love  to hear about it. i've shot them all, most of them in long sessions of abusive full-auto fun and there isn't ONE rifle THAT EVEN APPROACHES THE KALASHNIKOV'S ABILITY TO SOAK UP ABUSE.

I would humbly suggest that there were several rifles that can easily match the AK series rifle for reliability, namely the 98 Mauser, Mosin Nagant, and maybe even the venerable No.4 Mk1 Enfield. Of coures they are not gas operated, and I have seen examples of each of these jammed as well, but in the third world it is not unusual at all to see a nearly hundred year old rifle in daily service, the same cannot be said of the Kalishnakov design YET.

Naw man, you have to hand-cycle those even when they're clean.

I have a Russian video of their police forces fighting some baddies...there's an AK47 that was dropped on the street and a car ran over it, one of their guys picked up the AK and fired it at the car that sped away....try picking up an AR15 and firing it after a car runs over it!

Can someone say "plastic parts scattered all over"?

HMMMMMMMMM....if God does indeed ride a Harley.....then it follows that there is an AK in the sidescabbard.

Fuck that, anyone who rides a fucking harley and puts up with the associated shit is definitely an AR-15/M-16 GUY!

Now, if they ride a rice burner that starts everytime they get on it, then they probably have an AK in the side-car:)

It may be that they were using bad ammo, I have gotten surplus in 7.62x54 that would not fire before.

I read on here once prewar they had some firing into the air and they had to cycle every round.

Ask Vulcan over at assaultweb about the one his guys ran over on concrete (by accident) with a hummer, you might be suprised!

What makes you think the modern plastic they make modern M-16 stocks out of is inferior in any way to the east block plastic they make AK stocks out of?
