I notice the index hole on the threaded slant brake results in the brake being tilted to the right when it's indexed with the ball detent in the sight base. I reason this is because the upward recoil force is also to the right because of torque induced by the rifling, so the brake is tilted in that direction to counter it. The other types of brakes are assembled square to the gun and don't seem to take this into account. Any comments on slant brake effectiveness in auto or bump fire?

That is completly correct.  The brake is designed to counter the effects of muzzle rise during semi and auto fire.  Also, I have heard that is directs the blast away from the shooter during firing.

Works well if you’re right handed.

i don't think the slant compensator is very effective in burst fire or hold-the-trigger-down-untill-she's-dry mode. it works, after a fashion, but the recoil impulse coupled with the light weight of the weapon makes for a very jumpy gun in my hands.

in semi-auto i think its' effectiveness is so close nil as to be undiscernable to me.

if you look at an ak-74 brake you will notice that there are three radially located gas jet openings. these are offset, radially, to compensate for the torque effect lead off of the muzzle.

The 74-style brakes I have seen had the exhaust ports located symetrically - two on the top centerline and two on each side of the rear face of the large opening, facing forward and out. Maybe this design reduces the need for the offset angle. The 74-style brake is definitely effective, even the one that attaches with set screws. They will pull themselves off the barrel eventually, though, unless welded or brazed on.

look for the genuine commie brakes. the copies are rarely authentic.

Two brakes that I like the most and which work well are the Smith Technologies and the AK74 style brake.   The slant break is ok, but is really designed for a full-auto AK, which I know most users don't have except for the class 3 dudes.   In my experience, the slant does allow for some compensation, but whats really good about it is that the fireball is directed away from your sights when your shooting the AK.  The slant offsets the fireblast to the right, giving you a clearer view directly over the iron sights when firing the AK.  Overall like CAMPYBOB said, I too have noticed a slight muzzle climb reduction when firing semi-auto using the slant break.

Get a Smithy or a 74 brake.
