How well do scope systems work on AK's?  I'm asking about the ones with the mount on the left side of the receiver that comes up & over the iron sights......are they sturdy, and can you install any type of 1" scope with these mounts.......

the weaver mounts are pretty stout and depending on the quality/height rings you choose, you can toss one of those huge springfield armory 'sniper' scopes up top (yes...i did some gunshow ninja pull off this feat of erring do).

personally, i prefer the integrated russian military scope/mount packages, but i have seen plenty of nice glass mounted over top ak's.

With a 8x Russian Scope your groupings should be all within 2".  I've gotten 1/4" to 1 inch groupings with it on my SAR1 @ 100yards.  Not bad, 'eh?

I have the same scope on my SAR-2.  Works great.  Good groups at 100 yards.  Works well even when rapid firing.

And let me add. Stay away from any "receiver cover" mount type scope. they don't stay zeroed very well. mmk

Where does one pick up that Russian set-up. I looked on ebay and they are all around $300-400. I know you guys can lead me to a better price than that! Thanks for any info!

This board is the coolest. centerfiresystems seems to have the best deal going at $80. Anyone hear anything ngative about them?? They seem like they are pretty straight shooters!

I bought my 8x42 from them.  Arrived in 3 days.  Came with scope, batteries, cloth case and russian directions.

I think Freedom optics sends english directions with their scopes.

Russian side rail integral optics are a good bargain overall. If you want Western 1" optics, I prefer the MTK75 (avail at tantal) which is a siderail bracket with 1" rings built in. Works well for years on mine with compact scopes.
