What is the little spring loaded "catch" on the forward part of the receiver on the left side for?

I imagine its where the stock latches at

It's up near the barrel on the left side of the receiver. I don't think it has anything to do with the stock though.

it keeps the stock locked in the closed position.

if you look at the triangular left-side folding buttstock, the buttplate has a bulged area that rngages the hook on the latch.
