I am about to get a new AK of some type.  Of the types available right now, what would you guys recommend?

I want to stay under $500  I have a MAK-90 and Maybe a Saiga to do the conversion myself and I want 7.62x39 or .223. Although I could go 5.45, but I just don't really know enough about that caliber.

The Saiga route would be nice as I could save some money and get other things too, but I'm open.

I saw a nice SLR95 at the last gun show used in good condition for $450..

I prefer milled over stamp.

But I have to fully admit for the value.. the SAR models still rule!

You just can't beat them for the price.

And with a RSA trigger they are super nice!

sar-2 at $300
rsa trigger at $60
4 mags at $20
1000 rounds of fmj at $90

$30 left to have fun on.

Damn Campy, that's a good prescription for the "I need an AK" fever......Guess we will have to start calling you "Dr. AK"

You could work a deal with SSR-99.

He's selling his AK.

KF,

That one is a little pricey for me.   I don't mind the SAR thing since I'm pretty handy and have the experience to make it look nice.

The Saiga for $159 seems good since I could make my own stocks and moding it for Hi-caps is no big deal.

CampyBob,
I already own a few mags, so I could negate the cost of that too.   Oh, and ammo I have also.

Unless I find a good used one from someone then it will be a Saiga or Sar.  However there might be something I'm missing or don't know about.

Another vote for the SAR2. Grab one while you can.

Where are you getting the RSA trigger for $60? On the RSA page their much more than that.
