I've got a pre ban Poly in 5.56 that is tearing some of the case heads on extraction. The symptoms range from marks on the rim, to torn brass. Has anyone seen this on any 5.56 AK's. I've checked the extractor and it's smooth so I don't think it's a burr or other surface problem.

Your problem could be a rough chamber, or maybe excessive gas pressure. Although I really doubt the last. Give your chamber a good scrubbing and close inspection.

Also what type of ammo are you using ?

I had the problem with XM193. I shot some Wolf but didn't get the extraction problem. The gas pressure shouldn't be a problem, the rifle is well worn and if anything the gas piston needs replacement. I'll check and clean the chamber before I take it out again.

jeweler's rouge and a felt bob on a dremel tool...used with an in-and-out motion...will polish up the chamber. don't over do it!

but i would change over to wolf, barnaul or brow/silver bear steel cased ammunition. the ak it designed to run with steel cases.

Is ist doing this with a specific brand of ammo?

Some people were having these kinds or problems in AR land with the greek 'olympic' brand ammo.
