Hey guys. I have 2 AK's in my collection (a Maadi and an SAR-2). I have noticed that the hammers on both are being deformed from the carrier moving back and forth. I looked at a friends SAR-1, and his hammer is showing the same wear. I have picked up a new hammer set for the Maadi, and am guessing that I should get one for the SAR-2. My questions are these: 1) Are ALL century hammers junk, or are the 3 that I have seen just lemons? 2) What will happen if I don't replace the hammer on the SAR-2? Will I eventually start to get slam fires? How long until I reach "critical mass" and need to change it. I have put around 500 rounds through it. Should a new hammer of the SAR-2 go to the top of my list? Thanks! Brad |

"1) Are ALL century hammers junk, or are the 3 that I have seen just lemons?" the vast majority of the century oem fire control parts are trash. the sar-3 hammer being the worst of the lot. the geometry is wrong and the steel is often improperly heat treated on all the century parts. "2) What will happen if I don't replace the hammer on the SAR-2?" if it being brinneled by the firing pin, eventually it will not fire. if the carrier is bashing the covking ramp, eventually it will dot travel far enough to cock. "Will I eventually start to get slam fires?" that is a possibility, but more often the scenario will simply have the hammer following the bolt/carrier home into battery. the hammer USUALLY rides the bolt stem untill the bolt locks up as a built in safety measure. thus, the hammer SHOULD not have enough momentum to ignite the primer. all in theory, mind you! "How long until I reach "critical mass" and need to change it." the day you bought the rifle was the day those parts should have been chucked and a proper set, like the redstararms or gordon parts installed. "I have put around 500 rounds through it. Should a new hammer of the SAR-2 go to the top of my list?" i wouldn't become overly concerned at this point. i would, however, start seriously thinking about upgrading your fire control group. your shooting will show the improvement a great trigger makes over a merely "acceptable" trigger. |

I have experienced several Century triggers, 2 on my guns and a few others. They were all different in terms of feel and hammer beating. The QC is a bit random. My 2 had the hammers reshape themselves a bit in first few hundred rounds, then the wear stopped almost like a custom geometry change was needed. RSA sets took a clear 15% off my group sizes on each gun, after I had already tweaked the original bits as far as I could. |
