I got a simple question about the side rail I've seen on alot of the postban US-made AK's with the pistol grip.

Unlike alot of people, I don't want one on my AK and was wondering if this was something required by law to satisfy some "sporter" requirement or are there alot of receivers out there without this feature?

Thanks in advance.

I think it's more inline with current production.  They have kits so you can ADD one to a receiver w/o one.

it's no bother having one there, just don't put a mount on it!

if it is a bother having it there, buy one w/o one. lots of them to be found.  I saw 3 at a fun store saturday. (romaks and norincos IIRC)

the optic rail is standard equipment, now, on romanian and russian kalashnikovs. not only does it provide a stabile scope mounting platform, it helps stiffen the receiver.

the optic rail is optional on yugo rifles and appears to be optional on bulgarian export production.

most chinese guns lack the rail, as do all egyptian rifles.

Why did they not put the side scope mounts on the Chinese rifles? Are the poly and norinco receivers stronger than what is currently available, like SAR series rifles? Just wondering.

the poly and norinco stamped receivers are 1.5mm thick, as opposed to the euro pattern of 1mm. therefore, the chi-com receivers are stronger than the euro pattern...and heavier, of course.

the chinese did not adopt optics on any large scale for their ak's. only their sniping rifles, such as their dragunov svd clone, where equipped with optics.
