Another newbie trying to sort through the bewildering choices for my first AK47.  Have been lurking for a couple of weeks, trying to absorb all the great info on this board. Right now leaning towards an SAR 1 from AIM.  However trying to get in on the group buy from Solstice also looks very tempting.  Would be willing to spend $4-500 to get a little better quality.  Also, because I'm new to all this, want to keep it simple and avoid buying basic model and then swapping out/upgrading various parts.

Either would be great.  The SAR 1 or 2 would be quicker than a custom and unless your just wild about something special, either the 7.62 or 5.45 in the SAR series would be great shooters. My personal preference is the 5.45, and many deals abound.

SARs are fine first AKs. Define what you want for in quality; fit/finish, trigger feel, furniture and we'll steer from there.
