The folks over at www.ak-47.net have been claiming ad nauseum that Hesse is superior to OOW because it is fully heat treated whereas the OOW is only spot heat treated and uses a thicker gauge steel but softer than the Hesse.  Now Troy at Inrange was quite clear in stating he feels that the OOW receiver was the better way to go.  Opinions?

I had no problems with my OOW receiver. Just had to open up the safety/selector hole a bit to get the safety to fit, and smooth the rails out to get the bolt to slide free. But I feel this is good because it allows you to build a tighter fitting weapon. Look for the thread on my AK74 build up, I have pics of my OOW receiver.

My 5.45 Krinkov has an OOW receiver, and was built by InRange.  I ran over 1000 rounds through it while at Knob Creek.  It never failed and after disassembly/cleaning, I found no problems whatsoever.

both receivers have their good and bad points.

the hesse is pre-drilled for trunnion holes and looks far more authentic than the oow receiver. it is also black oxide finished and the rivets look more professionally installed.

the oow rec. is in the white and you can see exactly where the induction heat treating is applied.

both are soft as butter in the un-heat treted areas.

both are just fine to build an ak project on.

Hey Campy, whats up buddy:)

A call to Arsenal USA may get you a hold of a Hungarian FEG stamped receiver. They recently had a batch they were again using to build some of their complete weapons, maybe they have some left for sale:)

THE OOW REC. IS JUST FINE. the pivot holes and ejector tab are hat treated.

it lacks the 'x's at the pivot holes and has a hokey looking i.t.m. emblem embossed on the left side wall.

for build purposes it is a good deal. i'm helping a friend out with his oow/ak-74 right now.

ssr-99, how ya doing bud!?! i see you over on 1919a4.com every now and again. did you get yours built yet?

by all means, check with jimmy to see if he has any feg recs for sale...they are top notch.

I've always wondered about heat treating around the rivit holes.  Seems like they could stretch after a lot of shooting if not heat treated like the Hesses.

the only ovalized pivot holes i've ever seen were on an old b-west receiver...and they were nasty!
