I have a sar-1 and am wanting to get the barrel threaded so that I can put on a brake. Is this a dumb idea or leave it alone? who can I send it to to to the work? and what brake should I use? Thanks in advance jm

I threaded mine myself once the ban sunsetted. I think a SAR1 looks best with a classic slant comp, looking like the AKM it almost is.

I have never done barrel threading myself is it hard and what tools do I need?

To do it by hand without a lathe and taking the barrel off, you'll need:

pin punches, threading alignment tool for a 7.62 bore, threaded M14x1L, and an M14x1L hand threading die. Die holder is optional, but recommended. You should be able to find everything on Brownell's and perhaps a few other general gunsmith supply sites.

Edited for old guy brain fart on thread spec. 14 not 13.

I think I still have a 13mm slant brake in the parts bin. Drop me an IM with your addy and I'll shoot it over to you.

When the ban went away there were several kits for rent floating around the gun groups.

I threaded my SAR-1 in my garage in about 20 minutes.

Found it. It's a little rough. You still want it?Attached File

Measure the muzzle diameter.  Some were not turned down and can be threaded the standard 14mm LH thread.   Some have been turned down and need to be threaded 1/2" RH thread.  CNC Warriors sells everything you need.

Did mine, but was completely unable to get the front sight base off so I could put in the detent and spring. So I Locktited the brake on there and JB Welded the detent in place.

You'll need to remove the FSB to do it correctly as the threads will not be far enough down when you screw on the slant brake, leaving a gap between the rear of the slant brake and FSB if it's not removed... The "lead" for the die will not allow threading right up to the FSB.  IIRC about 2-3 threads extend under the FSB. While the FSB is off you may want remove the GB as well and replace it with one that has the bayonet lug on it.

Some people built the bayonet lug back up by welding and then filing/grinding to the correct shape, in order to keep the original GB.

True, but what I do is bevel the inside edge of the brake with a dremel and they will thread all the way to the FSB.

I threaded mine as far down as I could without removing the front sight and just used a crush washer.

I was thinking that all you had to do was drive out the front pin, install the spring and detent and replace the pin. I'm probably wrong because it seems like you need a press for just about everything with AKs.

Yeah, all you need to do is drive out the front pin.  No need to take off the FSB to install the detent pin.
