Looking at an Npap under folder what's everyone's experience with under folders love them hate them should I just move on to something else?

The metal to the cheekbone stock weld is just not fun.

I've had friends wrap it with paracord, but it still kind of sucks.

I have a M70ab2 and absolutely love it. Uncomfortable to shoot I'm assuming is what your asking? Not really, or I don't find it to be.

It's really not that bad. Would I want to fire thousands of rounds through it in a day, probably not.
But, a reasonable amount of mags ( I guess subjective) on a outing to the range is totally fine.

For me the compactness outweighs the minor shortcomings it has in cheek weld / comfort factors. I bring it with me almost every where I go. Truck gun. Camping trips. Hiking. Night stand gun.

It's also very accurate & controllable for what you get. A solid stock ( or something along those lines) is going to obviously be more comfortable, controllable to shoot & quicker with follow up shots.

And again, really not as bad as you would think.

Hope this helps OP.

That's what I figured. Not that they are that expensive but I don't really want to get something that's terrible to shoot and has to serve more than just a wall hanger.

I had one a long time ago. It was one of several I had. I did not like shooting them at all. Was more than happy to go back to regular wood and or polymer stock furniture. DID NOT like the non-existent cheek weld on the steel stock arm. Was more like a chin point of contact.
The AKs I am after are for shooting purposes. I am NOT looking to make perfect clones of XXYY model or variant. Until I can get one with a happy switch for less than the price of a truck, that will not change.
As for a damn fine shooting trashcan, with excellent reliability, and hit a cantaloupe as far as I can see one, I'll keep my lowly li'l ole Zhukov wearing Mak 90 thank you very much.

While I've shot more comfortable and less comfortable options, there is nothing "bad" or abusive about shooting an UF or the other wire/crutch folders that people seem to like to complain about.

Depends on the individual, some people whine about it more than others.

Some people complain like they are being forced to run backwards through a cornfield while naked. The cheek weld isn't ideal but is very usable. I liked my M70AB2 but in the end chose a different variant.

Never understood the gripes about underfolders.

Without question a full stock is more comfortable to shoot, so let's get that out of the way.

IMO, underfolders aren't really uncomfortable and I can shoot mine every bit as accurately as a fixed stock AK. They offer an extremely compact rifle solution that can be carried and concealed as easily as an SBR minus the paperwork.

I don't own mine to look or feel "cool". I don't own any gun with that in mind.

I like underfolders for their practical and flexible use.....and I find them extremely good at both.

Imagine using one in a car or truck. Would you still rather have a full stock?

It's a tool like everything else. Use it as intended.

as far as the shoulder goes its fine. The metal stock slamming into your cheek so you can get a cheek weld on it is a different story.

I've never had any major issues with them.

I have a Norinco UF, and a few other UP's,  in my collection for years and it was always cool , but never the funnest gun to take shooting

Full stock AK> side folder> VZ58 full stock > UF > wire stock. Just my opinion
9/19/2016 9:07:00 AM EDT
[#17]
I hate them. Some people like them, but then again some people have fatter cheeks than I do, too.

It's not quite as bad as shooting a shorter-barreled PTR-91 with the HK sliding stock, but it's a far cry from comfortable.

Unless you have an explicit reason for needing the absolutely shortest/narrowest setup possible, I highly suggest getting a poly or steel (not wire) sidefolder.

Almost as compact, while being wayyyyy better in the comfort department.

It's fine, the metal on my jawbone was not the best so I threw some paracord on it and now it is just fine.  I haven't (and probably never will) use it for a carbine class or anything high volume, but it is an extremely fun range toy.

I personally love shooting with them and don't think they suck at all. Both 7.62 and 5.45 guns are fun, the 7.62 probably more so for me. I can understand they are not as comfortable as a fixed stock but they are far from being these terrible things people make them out to be

Indeed, although I shoot mine just fine.  I remember during the AWB there were Vector AK's that had non-folding under folding stocks.  Nasty!

Have a 7.62 undefolder that would rattle your teeth, smack your cheekbone, and get unbearably hot in the summer and super cold in the winter so I added some paracord.  Fixed all the issues except I can't get a good cheek weld on it.  I could add the Echo93, Samson, or AMD65 tech cheek riser but I think its alot more work than I want to put into the gun.

With all that said I want one in 5.45x39 for some reason.  Underfolders suck and are cool at the same time!

That's what I have.  Wood is plain.  I put hogue furniture on it anyway.  Underfolder is just fine for me.  The metal does get pretty cold in the winter but I'm not understanding all the complaints about the stock.  I think the npap has fairly soft recoil for an AK anyway.  About the only complaint I have is how stiff the stock's rear shoulder plate is to fold down.  I guess I need to shoot it more.   Good luck with your rifle.  David

The only underfolders than suck firing are the ones the stock lock up is loose as hell and its hard to fire accurately but still fun to shoot.

I don't know how their currently shipping, but my fixed-stock NPAP from 2013-2014 came nicely finished. I've seen here (so take it for whatever that's worth) that Century is now using US-made wood for the handguards, so maybe hit up Apex for some authentic Yugo wood?

I can see that. It's also on a 12 gauge SBS, and for a guy who doesn't like shooting underfolders it seems unusual that he'd be ok with a gun configured like that.

Just an observation and that SBS is bab ass. Always wanted a Tromix myself.

I understand. It will wear you out of you don't employ adequate technique. It would be worse as an UF. I have fired a lot of rounds with that SBS. It is like an extension of my mind at this point, forget the hand, lol.

I don't find it uncomfortable at all if I use the sling like it was designed to. It naturally seems to fall right across the stock where my cheek meets when shouldering. I regret selling my Polish underfolder. I really want to get another one.
