Just picked up a 107-UR finally now that they've been available. While I'm waiting on my Form 1, I had a thought and wanted to check here and see if it's been done before.

Arsenal already has a model that has a fake booster correct? And the barrel actually extends past the gas block quite a bit and sits under the booster? I believe it's their milled pistol version that does this, the SAM7K I believe.

Here's a pic of what I'm referring to:

So… when it comes time to chop my barrel, would there be any problem of chopping it just a hair longer than the FSB and then putting like a standard 5/8×24 thread pitch on the barrel itself that's concentric? My thinking is, if I was able to get some kind of fake booster, most of the time, I'd leave that on over the exposed threaded barrel. But, at anytime, I could simply unthread the booster and then thread on my direct thread 308 can. Seems like I'd have the best of both worlds. I could even save the thread protector that comes with the 107-UR and throw that on the booster's threads when I have a can on.

The only negative I can think of is that the threads on the barrel would be unprotected with the booster on, but I'm sure there's got to be thread caps out there that would sit flush with the circumference of the barrel.

Thoughts? Dumb idea?

Yeah, plenty of people have done it.  I would definitely use a thread protector to keep the threads from filling up with crap any time you shoot with the booster on.

I'd research how well AKs suppress.  They are stupid loud.  Most people that have done it say it isn't worth the effort.  Just something to think of before you go down this path.  I almost did it with my krink so I could use my 5.56 suppressor.. decided to not even bother

Great, thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear it's been done before.

I've heard the same thing about suppressing an AK. I think 99% of the time I wouldn't even bother. I think it was more about just having the flexibility if I ever wanted to do it. Since I'd already be getting the barrel chopped, throwing some threads on there just seemed like a "why not".

Do you know what model [fake I assume] boosters this would work with?

As long as you don't leave a huge piece of barrel poking out (basically leave just enough for the threads), any normal booster will work.  Like the cone shaped one or the 4 piece one.

Here's one that I did:

Have you ever shot a suppressed AK?

I have a suppressed 16" AK74 that is very effective.  Never been to the range and not got at least one person come by and say something about how quiet the gun is.
My Suppressed Krinkov sounds just like any other 8" barreled gas gun does.....

Nope.  Figured my 11.5in AR was still plenty loud with the can, so my 8 inch AK would have been underwhelming.  So didn't bother.  Figured it wasn't worth the 8 inch barrel beating the hell out of my suppressor.  Zero interest in suppressing a 16+ inch rifle unless it's a DMR type rifle.. don't care for the weight on the end of the long barrel.

As a matter of fact suppressing supersonic centerfires has been pretty underwhelming

The SLR-107UR barrel diameter will not support 5/8-24 threads. Also, suppression is going to be poor on that.

FWIW, my 10.5" ak suppresses as well as or better than my 16" ar.
