Hey guys I am new to forum here. I bought a saiga 5.45 today and converted it. everything is well BUT is the carrier supposed to hit the rear trunnion? i shot about 400 rounds today functioned flawlessly but there are some peen marks on the rear trunnion. it does have an extra power wolff recoil spring too. i do have a blue blackjack buffer. i shot with and without it so it does function well with it. should i run the buffer? what will do more damage, metal on metal contact or the carrier hitting the buffer every time. this is my first ak please help. i want this rifle to last as long as the barrel will. thank you.

Some light 'touches' of the carrier to rear trunnion is normal. The peening on the tail of the carrier is mostly from contacting the hammer during cycling. My SLR-105 has some light contact marks on the rear trunnion. Most likely tolerance stacking that will correct itself. Unless your rear trunnion is being beat to sh*t, I wouldn't worry about it.

Get rid of the buffer, and why do you need extra power wolf recoil springs? Shoot it and have fun.

I know about the tail of the carrier. My main concern is the rear trunnion. It is peening a little. I just want it to last a long time. I am going to get married now (yay, wish me luck) so i gotta go. Ill be back tonight. Since the sanction on russian will now allow me to get another saiga i want/need this rifle to last as long as any ak would. So I really need to know if the buffer will do more damage than it prevents and how strong are the rivets that hold the rear trunnion? I know the ones that hold the old trigger group in place are harder than shit to remove. Thank you very much...woo i am nervous....

Pics would probably help us out here.

My Draco sbr did that when I first broke it in. They tend to be way overgassed to start with, so I was concerned, after a while it stopped peening and hasn't gotten any worse after a thousand plus rounds. It's fairly common with them. Pics would help, but if the receiver isn't egging, the rivets aren't getting deformed and the peening doesn't get a lot worse, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It's fine, shoot the hell out of it.

Really. Have you seen worse  that still held the rivets in place? So no buffer for me as in not bad enough to need it?

A buffer will turn those light taps into a harder thud. Although it would be on a softer material, it is not how the rifle is supposed to function. Buffers are only really useful for a a rifle that the carrier jumps out of the rails, and even then, they are just a bandaid fix.

So with peening like that do you think the weapon will last at least 20000 rounds?

It should if you're not bump firing. The peening should stop after a while.

I understand that you're wanting to protect the Saiga, but just shoot it and have fun. Converted Saigas aren't really that special, they'll probably show up under a different name/company, and Arsenal is still making 5.45 rifles.

Yep, my Draco is way worse than yours. It settled down after a while and hasn't gotten any worse, and continues to be fine. Well over 1k rounds through it now.
You'll be fine.

I think its fine..although I must say most of my AK's do not impact the rear like that....at the worst you will have easy rivet replacement down the road...if its reliable don't fawk with it now.

Oh its way reliable. Its hella fun to shoot too. Ok no buffer no worries. Thanks.

Ya I must say I used to have a 762x39 saiga and my 545 is much more fun to shoot. I like the less recoil.

Converted saiga's to me are the greatest weapon around. I love them. Is the arsenal bulgarian ak a good weapon?

Bulgarian Arsenals are excellent rifles, on par with the old SGL-21/31 rifles.

A stamped receiver is stronger huh.

I was referring to the Bulgarian SLR rifles, guess I should have clarified. IMO milled rifles are sexy but don't have any practical advantage over a stamped gun. Preparing for the flames.
