I just got a Romanian WASR, and the mag release absolutely sucks. Is there any way to modify it to release the magazine on command, or aftermarket mag releases I can install ?

Also, the front sight post is all the way to the right to shoot center of mass at 100 yards, and it drives me nuts looking down the sights, any way to fix this ? modify the rear sight at all so you can center the front sight post ?

the mag release will probably just have to be broken in.

The sight issue is probably a slight cant or crook somewhere in the rifle. Its common in aks and generally not a problem unless function suffers.

If it bothers you look up a few you tube vids of how to fix what you want to fix.

What's your issue with the mag release?  Are you wanting it to just drop free when you hit the lever similar to an AR? Or something else?

Just trying to understand what you think sucks about it before I start suggesting products or fixes to you.  Since what you want may not be possible.

If "release on command" should be read "Drop free", then no. That's not the way AK magazines, or their magazine wells work.

If it's that the release is too stiff, working it can help, or you can take it apart and sand the contact surfaces or tweak the spring a bit. It's probably better to be slightly stiff as opposed to sloppy fitting, though.

FSB cant is common to AKs and very common to WASRs, so that part shouldn't be much surprise. It's not exactly difficult to fix.

Im not expecting the mag to drop free like an AR,

but you push the mag release and it does NOT want to move sometimes. you have to reposition the rifle and turn it side ways and really get into it. not the type of fumbling around I would like to do in a pinch...

Does it only act like that when a mag is in the rifle, or is it stiff like that when there is no mag inserted?

And if it only does it with a magazine in the rifle, how many magazines have you tried and what type are they?

I wonder if its the bevel of the mag latch. Jim doesn't go into a ton of detail but you get the basic idea. As others have said try different mags.

Just be careful and don't modify anything on the rifle unless you have to. If the catch binds on surplus steel mags, then you have to do some adjusting to the surface that contacts the mag lug. BUT, if it only happens on polymer mags, I would adjust the bottom of the mag lug that is held by the catch - never adjust the top of that lug which will alter the vertical location of the feed lips when the mag is locked in. Usually all it takes is a swipe with a file.

Tiny flat file on the contact surface of the mag catch. I sometimes though will test several mags and then the ones that are snug, hit the release with a mallet so "break it in". It will force the contact surfaces to smooth out basically. FYI- taking to much off the release may make it even harder to remove magazines.

Buy a RPK rear sight. It has windage adjustments built in so you don't have to move the front sight post.

Sight unseen, your problem with the mag catch sounds like a training issue to me.

Grab a new mag and use it to strike the mag catch releasing and dropping the empty mag at the same time. Problem solved.

When I had my milled Krink built, I too had this problem. I sanded the release where it contacted the mag with some emery cloth. I simply had to remove the thickness of the powder coating, & all was fine. The builder really put it on thick.  GARY

Youre telling me I cant push a lever ?

No he's not telling you that, he's saying it isn't a push button release, where you depress the lever and the mag falls out. It's more of slap, pop, or grab manner of release. If you grab the mag and the lever together, the mag will come out in your hand in one movement. Or you can pop that lever and knock the empty mag out. There are a numerous quick methods of swapping mags on an AK, but one of them isn't pushing that lever like a button.

Squirt some CLP in the spring and cross pin and see if that doesn't loosen it up. Sometimes there's metal shavings and gunk in there from the factory.

^ thats the kind of tips I was looking for, or like the comment about using a little file to take a tiny bit of material off. Thank you.

I wouldn't file on the mag release until you narrow down if the issue is the lever, or the lug on the mag (this is likely if its a tapco mag that came with the rifle).

There is a reason I asked about if it only happened with a mag inserted, and someone else followed up with questions about what mags you are using  Start filing on things without really narrowing down the issue and you just might cause a bigger problem.

It sounds like the spring is too strong? I wonder how the spring could be weakened? Maybe the only way would be to remove it and heat-treat it.
