I've been looking at getting an AK to shoot steel cased ammo but I don't know which one I should get. I'd like it to be under $800 and have a 16" barrel. I want to stick with x39. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.
ETA: I looked around and found a few rifles I like: Zastava N-Pap fixed stock...600 Yugo M70 ABM Undefolder...700 Russian CAK-132 Atlantic Firearms Saiga...850 Arsenal SLR-107-21...989 at K-VAR but out of stock Are the Atlantic Saiga conversions any good? |

IMHO, You would be well served by grabbing a Romanian WASR for a first AK. If you do a bit of research on this forum, you can find out the common issues to watch out for and still get a rifle for about $600. If you can hunt a bit, you may be able to find a Romanian SAR-1 for not much more scratch. If you must go new, The SLR is the Cadillac rifle at a Cadillac price. It may also be worth your time to look around for a Saiga Legion 21.
Those can sometimes still be had for reasonable money. The Yugo/Serbian rifles are great quality but, use proprietary furniture and non chrome lined bbl's(other than the M85's). I'd rather go std pattern and be able to snap up surplus furniture, more common parts, and get the chrome lined tube. |

Yugo M70 ABM Undefolder...700 This my vote OP. Picked one up a few months ago, my first AK. Definitely NO regrets. Its very functional, surprisingly accurate, ergonomic & a decent price. I think mine was about $650.00 ish Thanks for taking the time to reply. It's come down to either the Yigo M70 ABM underfolder or the Zastava NPAP Underfolder, which should I go with? Anyone? |

Are the Atlantic Saiga conversions any good? Pretty much everything Atlantic does is solid, excellent customer service record, a real first-class vendor. If I only had 800 bucks to spend, and it was my first AK, i'd find something to buy in the 500-550 range, buy 10 mags, and 1000 rounds of ammo instead of just spending all of it on a rifle. |

N-pap at 559, then mags and ammo, then the fun begins. |
