Under folder to side folder?
I have a WASR 10/63 under folder I am consider switching to a side folder. I like the UF, but it does have the usual UF short comings, luckily mine is one of the tighter, more stable ones (for now, little use on it). 1. Is this even possible - to switch a UF to a SF, vs doing the same thing with a solid stock gun, which I know it is? 2. As unpractical as the UF is in it's shortcomings, am I better off leaving be seeing as how AK values have risen so much in the past few years? IE - am I "shooting a good horse" in doing this, and possibly ruining a good gun? 3. Should I just leave well enough alone and learn to live with the UF as again mine is still a nice "tight one", and deal with it as is? I'm only looking to switch it to a SF to make it more practical. This is also my second AK, I have another with a full stock which is my more to "go to" gun. I bought this as a spare and for it's portability if needed to be on the move with it/bug out. I don't plan to mount any optics or do anything other than hang a sling on it, again the first full stock AK I have I plan to do more with. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj23/esg94045/guns/IMG_0671.jpg Thanks - Eric |
| About all you can do is either install one of these or buy another rifle, if you want some side-folding action. |

You'd really be better off buying a separate sidefolder rifle. It'll cost you a ton to a have a smith do it. At a minimum:
Remove your underfolder stock. De-rivet and remove the underfolder trunnion. Weld up the UF rivet holes. Drill new holes for your new sidefolding mechanism and trunnion. Angle on the back end of your receiver might have to be altered for trunnion/folder assembly fitment. De-rivet the front trunnion, remove it. Press out your barrel. Modify front trunnion for the front stock latch assembly. Drill/mill front latch hole on side of receiver. Front trunnion re-riveted Install front latch. Reinstall the barrel. Install your sidefolder stock Refinish the rifle. |

Can the rear trunnion not just be removed and new one be installed/holes redrilled/whatever and that be the end of it??? Thanks - Eric . |

You can have it converted to a side folder rear trunnion, but it would cost a lot of money to have it properly installed, old holes/cutouts welded up, etc.
You would be much better off just buying a new rifle. To answer your question in the previous posts, the work on the front trunnion is to install the front latch, pin, and spring to retain the folded stock. Which type of side folder were you looking at? |

You could do just the rear work but your stock wouldn't lock up when you fold it. It'd swing unsecured. |

Anyone familiar with ACE Ltd. Products ? It looks like they offer adapters that might work w/o all this other work? http://riflestocks.com/store/ . Pretty sure any of those are for regular stamped receivers. I'm not aware of any of their products/adapters that can be used for an underfolder trunnion. |

OP you have few options.
1. Gunsmith conversion for triangle or 100 series side folder. $$$ 2. Gunsmith conversion with fixed stock trunion and slap a wire folder or Bonsteel on it. $$ 3. Mako adapter. $ 4. Butcher it with an ACE hinge welded or bolted to existing trunion and leave two gaping holes in receiver. OR Just buy a new rifle. In the end you will put way too much time and money in the UF to get what you want. |
