I don't particularly want to see an influx of price check threads, as it can easily outnumber other types of discussion if kept unchecked.

However, I think it can be educational to discuss nuances of AK firearms with respect to value, and I think there can be some things learned by all.

What do you guys think of creating a price check subsection within the AK forums? Sometimes it's not as easy to put a proper value on something because of the fickle AK market. It's definitely more unstable than AR-15's. With enough posts, maybe we could create an area where individuals could more easily find an answer concerning value, in turn reducing the amount of posts.

Maybe this is a bad idea. Forgive me, I am running on little sleep.

Honestly, 99% of the people who don't see the tacked thread at the top isn't going to see the specific forum. They don't want to look, they just want an instant answer with minimal work. Same with the people who post threads that have just been answered a few days ago.

I was thinking about this the other day.  The AR15 retro section has an "Appraisal Thread" tacked at the top and it works pretty well.  I actually don't care if price checks were allowed in general.

then there will be the same question asked over and over again because no one is willing to read through a page or 2 of thread titles. Ain't nobody got time fo dat!

In all honesty, the price check threads don't bother me that much either, I usually just ignore them unless the title catches my attention.

it would be nice to have it separated, that way the AK "guru's" could look at the rifle and say yay nay to whether its good or not outside of the general ak discussion

True, but since it would be in it's own tacked thread those who don't care about price checks don't even need to look there.

Sadly this is correct. Just the way it works with new posters.

cool. I think it would be adventitious to have a new sub section. It may be that mods end up moving a bunch of threads. I don't know how it works, but surely it can't much more work than locking a thread?

We need a tacked thread

Pricing/value is a legitimate concern especially with the high prices many are still asking.  If you're new to the AK you may not know that a WASR is not worth $800 and make a big mistake.  Adding a price section may help keep some from getting ripped off.  Plus sometimes I want to check on a price myself.

Seconded. I think this is a useful idea. Once it goes long enough, you will have threads on most every model, tack them and update every now and then as necessary. We have tacked threads in the AR section for ammo prices, this is a somewhat similar concept. Also tack the AK buyers guide thread at the top of this proposed forum as it's the most useful for new folks: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_4_64/141256_The_AK_Buyer_s_Guide___A_Beginner_s_Guide_to_the_AK_Platform__ask_all_new_AK_questions_in_here_.html

That's what I think would happen.  If they can't see the red hightlighted thread up top, they aren't going to bother looking for a specific forum or thread to post it in.

But instead of just locking the thread as is done now, they could just be directed to the price check thread.

I nominate Farmer Ted as moderator of the new subforum.

I don't think we need an entire sub-forum for this kind of thing do to the many of the reasons already listed here.

I may be open to the idea of a thread that people can post in, similar to the one in the AR Retro forum. If we were to allow one, it would be limited to this forum only. Plus, if it is abused (we think they are nothing but covert for sale ads) we will have to put an end to the thread. So it some policing from the membership would go a long way to keeping it on track.

Would that be something that would work?

That's a good compromise.   If it doesn't work out as expexted, staff can delete the forum.

Thanks

I'd moderate it (How much does it pay?).

I'm not saying a sub forum, just a pinned threads at the top of this section. Although a sub forum would work also.

This is an example, see the "OFFICIAL APPRAISAL THREAD-REQUESTS FOR APPRAISALS ONLY IN THIS THREAD" at the top:

I like the idea of a single thread.

(as time moves on, they are excellent accounts of past prices)

Single thread sounds good. I know when I was looking it would have been sort of nice to see price ranges. New users or those searching for an AK, assuming they can read and locate the thread, could definitely benefit from it.

A similar tacked thread works ok in the Reloading forum, it's at 239 pages as of today.

Still have 5 to 15 threads a week to lock that should have been in the tacked thread. The red bannered thread there can't be seen by some.

Remember threads can't be moved in the same forum, so if they were posted in the forum, they would get locked and be told about the tacked thread.

I'm willing to try a tacked "price check" thread.
