So I had a gen 1 556r, that didn't really have any problems unless I shot wolf hp's out of it! I guess the magwell wore pretty good using all the steel mags I use! but all in all it was a good piece! I was offered to trade her off for some pistols a few weeks ago, so I said fuck it and made the move.

Last week I was offered, what I feel,  is an unbeatable price at the nations gun show on some gen 2's. So I bought 2, one standard one swat. Just put a case through between the two. Both had zero issues. Both  were only upgraded with vortex flash suppressor sand aim point t1's....both were zeroedand shot out to 300 yds with a 50yd zero.

I gotta just say I love these rifles, I think I found my grail gun!!! Both handled very well, but I prefer the swat as the rail stayed MUCH cooler through the 500 rounds. These guns just felt effortless to shoot. It's just a modern AK to me. I'm really in love!

I know there is some hate for sigs in general as of late, but also this rifle especially because the gen one apparently had soo many issues for many people. I just wanna see what some fell AK fanatics think about this gun? Likes, dislikes, and have you shot one?

Personally I was always an AR guy, until I picked up a hooked up arsenal AK. Shooting them side by side today really put things in perspective. The AR almost feels like a toy, the arsenal feels great with its 74 style brake, but when shot side by side with the 556r, I could immediately see how much more combat effective the 556r could be. Recoil is barely better on the arsenal. But overall, I prefer the sig hands down, especially them being roughly the exact same cost to me.

If this thing had a more ergonomic safety lever,  bolt hold open, welded top rail,  and a sleek aluminum rail(quad less) attached as the current quad.(which stayed remarkably cool) from factory... This would hands down be the best rifle ever (for me) and I would love it extra much!!!

I came close to getting one, but I didn't want to get into another platform so I bought a Vepr instead.

Agreed, love my 556R.  And yes I don't like that the top rail and magwell reinforcement are screwed in.  No, you shouldn't have to buy the longer length safety.  Same with the BUIS.  Great rifle though.

I'm sort of looking at the xi but the R is simple and reliable in function but also modernized; just about perfect.  Dunno how it'll hold up over the long term vs my AKs.  I do think it'll need more parts replacement/maintenance than an AK over time but I still give it thumbs up.

I just got a Gen 2 556R - haven't even fired it yet. Already lovin' it more than the post-ban FEG AKM I sold to get it. This is a rifle to be used, not looked-at. I kept my FEG AMD65, and put the SIG red-dot that came on the 556R on it with a Strike rear sight rail. The 556R got a SIG CP1 4X scope with integral mount. I don't have any problem with it as it is, safety and all - just needs some getting used-to. I basically like everything about it - takes AK ammo and mags, AR-type removable upper, AK-type bolt/barrel layout, folding stock, gas piston with regulator valve, rail-top receiver. Essentially the best features of the AK and AR in a Swiss 550-style package. Made in the USA, comes with a warranty and you can get parts for it. No 922r concerns. I considered waiting for the xi, but I really like the traditional 550 look better. I had never seen a 556R before I got it, and I was surprised at the lightness and ease of handling.

Shot the hell out of mine last week. Not a single hiccup.
It was a great buy (gen2). Need to try it with a can.

Interesting. I haven't decided whether the core problem is the shortness of the lever or the angle of the grip...

Still love mine, but the safety sucks.

+1, great weight at 7 lbs (before mag and optics) and it presents/handles great.

I haven't swapped it out yet but for me it's both.  Mostly too short but the angle isn't the greatest.  Krebs safety really seems to help though.

Yeah the krebs looks like it will be much better... In other news, it appears the gun I spoke
Of being perfection is there sig 556xi Russian...I think the handgaurd is a little short but it will be a great piece once it is sbr'd and she loses that heinous cheek riser. I saw the 556 version at the show right next to the R's I purchased, it looks good, but I definitely want it in x39. I don't think it has bolt hold open but fuck it, looks like an awesome piece. I honestly don't think I'll ever sell my current R's though, they look to be excellent shtf choices.

I may get one. Tempted to take the dremel to an old AR grip to see if I can fix that too...

I'd love to SBR it, but I lack the skills, plus it's rock solid reliable now.

You're right - they do not have a bolt hold-open.

Here's mine with the SIG CP-1 4X scope and a Pro Mag black smoke mag. I haven't fired the mag yet but it fits the SIG great and feeds fine in static loading with dummy rounds.
