I've been going round on a .308 rifle.  I've thought about an AR10, Ruger Scout bolt w/ mag and the VEPR.  This week its back to the VEPR...thing look so damned good.  You guys that have had good/bad experiences with VEPR's, can you tell me what you like/don't like?  I always see used ones on sale in TX.

- I've seen one used seller claiming his was really good, much better then the stripped down VEPRs at that popular internet site...what does that mean?  Are there some models better then others?
- What's the best place to pick up a good one?  Atlantic Firewarms, Classic Firearms?
- Arsonal seems to be the holy grail of quallty AK's...but I don't see them making VEPR's.

If I get a VEPR...help me make a good choice.

I have two .308 Veprs.  One 20" and one 23".  Total round count between the two rifles is somewhere between 2000 - 3000 rounds.   I shoot them quite a bit.

Good accuracy, stellar reliability, and excellent build quality are typical for these rifles.

I have nothing negative to say about either rifle, it's all good.

If you like the wood thumbhole stock, then just get one of the slant cut receiver ones. If you want "standard" ak style furniture then look for the square back and replace the wood that comes on them.  Centerfire still has some 23" square backs.

I would go with one of these rifles, probably the standard-sight model given the cost is the same.  The integrated sight model some people feel handles better and may be slightly more accurate, but the non-standard sight blocks and non-standard gas tube really limits what you can do with the forend furniture.  I would say the integrated-sight model almost demands to be shot with optics.
These are the last of the square-backed Veprs.  When they are done there will be no more.  With relatively small numbers made, they will hold their value better than the slant-backs.
Avoid the 16" rifles and the 23" rifles unless you just want range toys.  The 16" flash and concussion are impressive if that's what you're after, but it pretty well nerfs the .308.  The 23" looks cool done up as a Dragunov if that's what you like, but some say it has poor barrel harmonics which harm accuracy.  The 20" Vepr model is really the sweet spot for serious use.

I'm building a MATEN but now that Definitive Arms is going to make a SR-25 mag adaptor for the VEPR I have no choice but to get one. Pending some positive reviews on the adaptor after it's release.
