I have a guy offering me an AK in .308. He thinks it's a Saiga and I think it's a Vepr. I don't recall ever seeing a Saiga with an angled cut receiver.

Here is a link to his ad:  Saiga?.

Here is what I think it is:  Vepr.

He also claims that Saigas are of better quality than Veprs. How true is this?

VEPR, and not true.

Guy is an idiot.  And his asking price is too high.

Definitely a Vepr that's about $400-500 too expensive.

That's what I figured. So it should be in the $700-$800 range?

There are online retailers with the more desirable square backed receiver in stock for $730. Might have been Centerfire?

Wow, I will try to bring the guy down to earth, but I don't see that happening. I will probably end up passing on this. Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah, sounds like you found someone trying to dump their panic buy.

That's what I thought. He said he got it on trade so I don't know.

Asking entirely too much and has no idea what he's actually selling... The guy's a moron at best, or he's running a scam at worst. I'd stay away.

did a little digging, and there are slant cut saigas, they have not been imported in a while. It could be a saiga after all. If it is, even more reason to just buy a new VEPR since they are higher quality and have a stronger receiver.

Yes, 308-1 came in slant cut receiver.  I think it was around '04/05 when they popped up.  Mags back then were a bitch to find (and pricey if you did) and mostly limited to 8 rounds.  Made the gun kind of unpopular.

A closer look reveals it has the Saiga bolt hold open.. so maybe it is a Saiga.  Either way, its too expensive when a VEPR 308 can be had for about $750.

There was an slr-107cr on the EE.

There is also a SAR-1 on Armslist, I'd snatch it up as sar-1's debanned are badass

The guy finally sent me some pics and it is indeed a Saiga 308-1, says so right on the receiver. There is no way that I will trade now. I appreciate the help, guys.

It's a Saiga 308 ver 21. They were about $650 pre Sandy Hook.

They only have the bulge on the right side, not on the left.
