| Been getting some trigger slap from my "new" SAR-1 and plan on replacing the the FCG with a Tapco G2 double hook. Is there a better FCG to go with? Is it worth it to replace the shepard's hook with a retaining plate? Lastly - I've heard of people rounding off the hammer and polishing it (without taking any of the striking face of the hammer) to smooth out the action, is this recommended? |

I did some work on the hammer of my G2. Basically just polishing and rounding part out to keep it from making the carrier hang up on it. If I even slightly rode the bolt forward the carrier always got caught on the hammer... got to be annoying as hell (and just makes the rifle feel cheap to me) so I worked on the hammer some and now it never happens.
The retainer spring is fine. The plates are a good swap if you are the type who removes the FCG frequently, but are otherwise pretty pointless. I have one because it was available locally and I didn't feel like paying shipping for just a retainer spring. The G2 is basically the best bang for your buck AK FCG. I just wish it was available in a two stage version like the Arsenal FCG. |

Double hook trigger is for milled receiver AKs...Single hook is for stamped receiver AKs.
You can use a double hook trigger in a stamped receiver but you'll probably have to make a notch or slightly enlarge the hole where the trigger sticks out of the bottom of the receiver. Personally, I'd just get the single hook trigger G2 FCG and be done with it. |

There are "better" trigger units available, including fully adjustable versions. These are sort of over-kill for an AK, in my opinion.
The G2 is a good, strong, durable unit and doesn't cost a small fortune. I'd be VERY careful about "polishing" or altering the hammer. The face of the hammer interacts with the "tail" on the rear of the bolt carrier to prevent slam-fires. Alter the hammer and you can defeat the safety feature. An AK will self-polish and the action will smooth out on it's own with firing. If you do want to "polish" remember, when we say "polish" we DON'T mean "like a mirror", we mean SMOOTH. The idea is to level any machine marks that can cause rough operation. Polishing like a mirror often ruins parts. The wire retainer in the AK is an "elegant engineering solution" to retention of the pins. It's cheap, fool proof, lasts forever, is as simple as possible, and prevents any chance of the pins rotating and wearing the receiver holes. Unless you intend to remove the trigger unit often, a retainer plate is rather wasted money, and many plates will allow the pins to rotate in the receiver. |
| Buy an arsenal two stage and with a little careful work you can reduce the 8 lb trigger pull to around 5 ish. I have done this multiple times and have had great results. The trick is to not remove so much material that you remove the ridge that gives a perceived "2 stage" feel. If cost is not an issue than a red star adjustable trigger works great. While many say its overkill for a rifle such as an ak they're wrong. The trigger is the most important part of the firearm and with the rsa you can tune the trigger to your needs. The reataining plates are excellent and are a cheap frustration free alternative to the shepards hook. If you choose an adjustable trigger it's a definate plus to have. |
| This is because when the Russians came out with the AKM, the Chinese did not adopt it. They stayed with the double hook trigger, the fat AK47 barrel, & all other milled AK features, even though they went with the stamped receiver. The reason the AKM went from double hook to single hook was to make room for the retarder. The right hook had to vanish for that to happen. Besides the G-2 trigger, whether single or double hook is patterned after the double hook trigger. So a real imported single hook trigger will not feel like shooting a single hook G-2 trigger. Just look at them & see the difference. GARY |
| In the past I have put a WTB ad here looking for imported FCG's that people removed from their AK's that they installed G-2's. Never paid more than $15. I have accumulated many excellent Chinese FCG's from MAK 90's, & some Romanian FCG's from Draco's that people SBR'd. GARY |

Sar-1's came with a single hook installed. If yours has a double hook installed did someone cut a second notch in the receiver so that the double hook trigger could be installed?
Here is one of my rifles I modified for the double hook trigger.
Single hook receiver before cutting second notch.
With a fire control retainer plate you don't have to struggle with a wire retainer. This is a Tapco retainer.
Trigger slap is caused by the tail on some diconnectors causing the trigger to rebound and "slap" your trigger finger causing pain. This can be cured by a simple modification to the disconnector. Trigger slap fix. At the same time you can polish the fire control group which will improve any trigger group. Fire control group polishing instructions. |

Ok. It seems that I misunderstood what a "double-hook" is and I actually have a single. I'm still learning, so bear with me. Here's what I've got going on in there.

| The only reason people buy USA-made trigger sets is for 922r compliance. You don't need that - you just need to fix the slap. But if you buy a G2 anyway, don't polish it or do anything else to it. They are very nice triggers - smooth and light. Makes a standard AR15 trigger feel like a rusty old cap gun. |
| I'm thinking I'm going to go with a new single stage, single hook FCG and hammer spring from K-Var. To hell with doing all that extra work for the double hook. Would I be right to assume that Bulgarian FCGs would be the best of the foreign parts? I hear everybody talking about how great the Bulgy AKs are outstanding, but I've never fired one unfortunately. I thought about getting a RSA adjustable trigger, but I'm unsure if it's justifiable to spend that much on an AK trigger. |

Bulgarian imported AKs don't have Bulgarian imported fire control groups in them. They replaced them with US made groups for 922(r) compliance. Many used Arsenal of NV fire control groups which then were replaced because they weren't happy with them. Made with MIM process and reports of parts breaking. K-Var FCG is probably MIM. 30% more in cost than Tapco G2.
Fix the FCG in your rifle for free in 10 minutes with a dremel or install a Tapco set. Buy a Red Star Arms FCG if you want to spend close to $90.00 and want to spend time getting it adjusted right. |
