I have been talking to a guy about buying this rifle (I'm pretty new to the AK world) and he says it has a 3rd pin. After researching what that is I learned to stay away from that! But I've looked at the pictures over and over and don't see it. I know it's the one to the left of the mag release and don't see it. Should I stay away to be safe?

If they're actually illegal why would someone advertise it?

I've done research on the SAR1 and it appears that some came in stamped where the hole should go but were not drilled and pinned. The ATF wasn't happy about the stamp but it wasn't illegal.

Something just doesn't feel right...

Thanks guys!

You are correct.  The stamp (usually shaped like a Y) is OK, a hole is not.

I see no 3rd pin. I'd ask for better pics. If it does, or looks like it was welded up, steer way clear.

No third axis pin. It would have been next to the 2nd pin, just under the left side of the optics rail.

The person listing the rifle though is an idiot.

He sent me more pictures but I don't have a photo bucket account set up to get them on here. There IS a pin going through the X by the mag release but it's not in the right spot. It would be the hole furthest forward toward the forearm grip, right? The middle pin is mag release and the rear pin is trigger?

It's close enough I'm not going to mess with it... Sucks... Love the rifle, it's exactly what I was looking for. Minus the possible jail sentence. Lol

You can upload and post them from tinypic.com with no hassle or account needed.

You may be seeing the center support rivet, which is legal and supposed to be there.

The rear pin is for the trigger, middle is for the hammer, and the evil third pin is for the auto sear.

I don't think it has a 3rd pin, everything looks right. But in the slight chance I'm not willing to risk my freedom or firearms over something that stupid. I'll try to upload pictures.

If he purchased it in 2001 I highly doubt it has a 3rd pin, despite the fact that there is not one in those pics.

An SAR-1 definitely DOES NOT have a 3rd pin.  I have owned several of them.

The mag wrapped in string pretty much sums it up for me.

The gun is fine but appears not to have a threaded barrel, and is probably turned down too small already for threads.

SAR-1 is GTG, but that is a ban era one.

"and correct equipment for 3rd pin if you intend to convert it to full auto"

This guy is a moron. WHATEVER that "equipment" is you do not want it.

But the rifle itself is fine... would be better if the bayo lug was there and the barrel was threaded.

Agree. I've been shopping for a non Saiga AK for a while and finally thought I had a deal worked out (not for the price he listed)

I did sent him a lengthy email last night that included pictures of a true 3rd pin SAR1 so he could compare. Also told him it was illegal without the proper stamp. It sounds like he was just confused and wasn't aware it was even illegal to have. He was mixed up with the X stamp where the pin should be... Pretty sure he pulled the ad to prevent any problems. Either way, even if it is 100% legal, I'm going to keep looking. In the SLIGHT chance there is anything wrong it's not worth it.
