Looking to buy my first AK and would appreciate your advice and recommendations.

The gun will be a no kidding, ride in a case, stay in vehicle, behind the seat, truck gun.  I feel an under folder will serve my needs/desires best.  Got to shoot a Yugo with overmolded furniture and really like it.

I’d like to step up a notch in fit and finish without going over board.  Spend lots of time on Goggle and searching this and other sites and to be honest, I’m suffering info overload.  The Krinkov and Arsenal SAS M7 are out of my price range for this weapon.  The AA or IAC Polish under folders seem to be the answer.

What’s your opinion of the Polish guns?  Is their quality of workmanship as good as or better than a Yugo?  Am I overlooking something in the $600 to $800 price range?

Thanks.

Polish AKs are absolutely top notch, among the very best.  My Polish underfolder is a very fine rifle.  Having said that, a kit build is only as good as the builder in terms of function.

I used to own a romanian underfolder, imported by Century.

Honestly, I loved that gun.  No, it does not compare to my SGL21 in terms of fit & finish, but it was close.

Everything was surprisingly straight and reliability was a no brainer.

I've heard nothing but good things about the polish under folders.

I've also heard good things about IAC.

I too have a Romanian underfolder and love it. I heard that Romania hasn't released any underfolders lately and they are getting harder to get ? I don't know if this is true but I saw some listed at 900 bucks recently. I have seen several Yugo underfolders though so you might have very good luck with those

Another vote for a Romy underfolder.

Yugos and Poles do not always have chrome
lined barrels.

Casting my vote for the Pole.
The Polish AKM variant is absolutely top notch, depending on builder and kit. (as others have already pointed out)

This one is my favorite. A Glen Riddle Magnum Gunsmithing build on a very early Dan's kit with original CHFCL barrel, parkoted, with some gorgeous furniture. A downright perfect rifle IMHO Everything you want in an AKM, Especially pertaining to the OP's intended purpose.

Also pictured in some Black KVAR furniture.....for fun....

Not trying to hijack, but where (outside of the EE) is a good place to pickup a Romanian or polish underfolder?

Is one more country's better at taking mods/accessories like tws rail over another?

Interarms makes really nice AKs for the price. I haven't owned one but I handled quite a few. The Interarms Tantal I almost bought (went to get money and came back it was sold) was gorgeous.
I also looked closely at an Interams Polish underfolder which was just as nice looking. I have no personal experience as far as canted sights or accuracy, but those are easy fixes if need be. Have you ever
shot an underfolder? A lot of people don't like them. The little bit of play in the stock combined with the snappy recoil of the AK tends to make that metal kinda crappy on the cheekbone. I would try to shoot
one before you drop the money if you haven't. If a side folder will fit in your truck you may like that better.

One thing I would recommend especially seeing you are in Mississippi would be some sort of dessicant or breathable case. I had a MAADI as a truck gun that rusted pretty quick up here in Vermont just
from the humidity. Luckily I caught it before it pitted the barrel. I started taking it out regularly and oiling it which helped.

Polish and Romanian UFs are both worthy additions. If you can find a deal (I didn't) or not, you will enjoy a SAS M-7. Here is my Classic:

If you intend to leave it in your vehicle, the Century AKMS is an affordable option. Mine has been flawless.

Love the polish rifles... had two built by Jesse at 762LLC... they are amazing. Unfortunately I am having to sell them...

Roger on the rust advice, it's a constant fight here on the Gulf Coast.  I did shoot the underfolder and it was a bit of a challange before the owner modified it.  He added a Sampson Mfg cheek rest, Krebs ghost ring sights, and a partial paracord wrap.  Also, he changed out the wood for Houge furniture.  Anyway, the gun went from uncomfortable and hard to shoot to and decently accurate and damn tempting!  Our vehicles are considered an extension of residence and the size of the modified underfolder seems perfect for my Ford Ranger.  Besides, I've come to believe owing an AK platform in 7.62X39 makes a lot of sense.  I going to contact my FFL tomarrow about a Pole. Looking at Centerfire Systems or Atlantic Firearms for purchase.  Thanks for all the advice and pics
