Yesterday I had my first real malfunctions with an AK (an AK-74).  I was using silver bear ammo, which is the first time I've ever shot it through the gun (gun has around 600-800 rd through it so far), and I got a failure to feed.  I normally use 7n6, never had a failure with that.  I wish I took pictures of it, but I was in a hurry to clear it.  The round went sticking in nose up (the tip missed the chamber by a good deal).  This was the first time using the Kreb's safety, not sure if that is related at all.  I can say that the safety is somewhat loose (smooth?) compared to the old Bulgarian one.

This is the first time I've ever had a malfunction on any of my AKs, just trying to figure out what happened or if I should be concerned.  The gun is relatively newly built.

maybe your feed ramp is too much ramp? and your rounds go high, unlike most that go low and jam under the chamber?

I wouldn't worry about one malfunction.

If it goes on to happen regularly.. then its something worth looking into.  Until then.. don't sweat it.

1 malfunction in 800 rds, I would not worry.  Yet.

Was it the last round in the mag? Have you been using this mag for a while?

IF it was anything, I'd blame the mag 1st. Could have just been a fluke.

I'll go back to the range and run another 200 rounds next time to see if everything is GTG.

It couldn't be the silver bear ammo, could it?  Wish I had marked the mag.  Next time, I'll be damn sure to take pictures and note exactly what happened.

+1, The only failures I've had in my SGL 31 are because of the magazine

If it fails again, definitely keep track of what mag you are using.  Mark it with some tape or something, then you'll be able to narrow down if it is a mag issue pretty easily if more future failures happen when using that mag.

As someone above said, I'd blame the mag first. A weak mag spring could result in that kind of malfunction. I've always had very very good luck with silver bear ammo.

I have a mag that will cause hollow points to jam every now and then.  It was only hollow points and only that Asian mag.  On mine that mag rides lower than every other mag I have used and the hollow points just barely snag the lower lip of the feed ramp.

I have a 20rd Hungarian mag that fails to feed the last round in the mag. The follower also sits low when it's empty so the round goes in at a steeper angle on the bullet guide. So when I want to do some bench shooting for groups, I shoot 5round groups but load 6 in the mag and stop at 5.

You may also want to open up your mags and clean them. You don't know what's in there causing the follower to bind.

Haven't shot SB in my AKs, but in my ARs Ive shot a ton of it and it's always been fine.. so it should be good to go... unless it keeps happening.. id agree its probably just a fluke, it does happen... then try to rule out mag related, then check ak...

Come to think of it, I've never cleaned my used surplus Bulgy mags once.  How often do you guys clean your mags and are there instructions online somewhere on how to take them apart?

turn mag upside down. Unset bullet in stub sticking out of floor plate. Slide floor plate off (go slow please). Pull spring and follower out.

I almost never clean my mags unless I've been shooting in the rain.

Emphasis on the slow, otherwise you will probably take a spring to the face. If you keep a thumb over the bottom of the mag while you slide the floor plate off it should prevent this.
The only time I clean my mags out is when I end up in the mud or a lot of sand. I'm in Florida, so either situation is not that uncommon unless I am just plinking.

OK, so I took the rifle to the range again today and ran about 150-200 rds through it.  Had 3 failures to eject, all on the same mag (Bulgarian circle 21).  The empty casings were getting stuck in between the bolt face and the trunnion, preventing proper feeding.  So seems to be a mag problem, or at least I hope.  I guess springs wear out after 20 years of use?  Should I replace the mag springs with new ones?

I would. Cheep and easy fix. You can try to take it apart and clean it. You can also try and stretch the spring back out. That will buy you some time though. A worn spring is a worn spring. It never hurts to have extra springs around anyway.

Where do you obtain replacement springs for your mags?
