my saiga didn't come with a bullet guide when i bought it, but it came with a steel 30-round magazine.  i've put 120 flawless rounds through it (plus however many the previous fired) with that stell mag.  what's the deal?  i do have a bullet guide and have already drilled and tapped a hole for it, but would have to file some material off the front of the steel mag for it to fit.  should i file the mag even though it works great without the guide, or wait until i come across a mag that won't feed?

a pic would help. I'd suggest you buy more mags and make sure that they all are having the same issue. I'd probably shave a tad off the guide before the mag. Post a pic of where it's hitting so we can have a better understanding of the conflict,

when i asked carolina shooters supply about filing down the guide they said to file down the mag.  i included pics of the mag in question.  if someone can identify what kind it is i'd be grateful.  thanks.

that thing that screws in is the bullet guide.

Your mag looks like it has the guide. Thats why it worked for you. You can remove the bullet guide from the gun or mag.

That's a good mag for a Saiga with no guide. I would just get more mags and keep that mag original, instead of altering it. That way you keep your guide.

Did someone weld up a bullet guide onto that mag so it would work in a Saiga or is that how it came?  I've had a .223 AK before but no mag looked like that.

Your biggest issue is that you have a flat bullet guide and a round trunnion. You need a round bullet guide.

That is a Weiger,it has been altered.
I would bet it was done by Surefire a few years back they did  this to an unknown amount of the Weigers, for use in Saigas that did not have bullet guides installed.

I'm out of my element here, never having messed with a bullet guide insert, but it looks to me like you could file it and contour it to match the mag well so you could use any magazine.

Again, it sticks out too far because it is a "flat" bullte guide ona round trunnion. It is too tall and does not sit back like it is supposed to becasue of the round trunion. Get the right part.
Right part - Round Trunnion Bullet guide

looks like a round one to me. If it has a contour on the bottom, then it's the right one. I don't think your issue is with the bullet guide, but the mag. Find a bulgy 223 mag and I bet it works.

after a couple of you guys pointed out that the mag is a modified wieger (thanks for that by the way) i'll pick up a standard .223 ak mag and see how it fits.  thanks again guys.

If it is rounded at the bottom it is correct. on the 223 it will stick out that far. If you get a Bulgarian 223 mag the mag will have to be filed to fit in a Saiga. It won't just go right in. You will have to remove a little in the front on the sides and a little to go under the guide.

Saiga ak style rifles come with mags that have installed guides, when you convert a saiga to an AK, you need to install a bullet guide to use the standard ak mags since the standard ak mag won't correctly guide the bullet... That's the case for my 7.62 saiga, don't know what standard .223 ak mags are like and how they guide bullets into the barrel...
