| Good afternoon gents, I was wondering if you guys could answer a couple questions. First, how hard is it to assemble an AK parts kit? Second, if this is something above a novice level what is the average price for assembling a parts kit? Thanks! |
| someone in your HTF maybe willing to loan you a set of tools to build a parts kit into a rifle. Ask around, I know in my HTF I have seen numerous cases of lending tools or specialized items. I have even heard of one or two build parties where members meet up to assemble various parts kits as a group. As far as prices, you can build a cheap rifle for around 400-550, this is highly dependent on your choices on parts. That includes alot of work however (ie. using a flat and bending it yourself). If you are a novice on a budget, buy a cheaper AK type rifle before you build. I would only build if I had to have a specific type of AK. I would not build to have a shooter/truck gun. |

That is not even possible. Customs is extremely strict on prohibited/restricted items. I went through the course that enables me to work as a Customs Clearance Agent and they don't even allow magazines through. I'm looking at a Bulgarian AK-74 parts kit to possibly build/have built on a NoDak Spud receiver. Any idea what the average gunsmith would charge to assemble a kit like that? |
| Its not that hard at all. I just did my first build with a friend. We are building a total of six. It was the first build for both of us and the more we did it the better we got at it and thus the easier it became and went faster. As mentioned above the tools are the big thing. |

Well, you may be late to the party. Tooling, if you're not good at improvising, can be expensive. As mentioned before, if you can get in on a build party or secure a loaner, then it might be worth while. Parts kits have gotten outrageously expensive (compared to back in the day). So from an old guy perspective, if you can find a decent one that functions for less than $500, best to just buy one.
To illustrate the point, when I started dabbling in this hobby, a matching Romy G kit could be had for $65 complete with original barrel. I also purchased a complete, matching Polish underfolder, with original barrel, for $95. I promise, you won't find those prices anywhere. Add in the original barrel instead of US made one, and the kit will be priced higher. The good old days are pretty much gone. |
