Been looking at different rifles.  I'm not sure I know the difference between a AK47 and a AK74?  I'm basically looking for a beater.  Something to throw in the truck and keep it there, but want it to be fairly accurate, say able to hit a softball sized target @ 100.  The WASR 10/63 comes to mind.  Seems a guy could get one on Gunbroker for about 450 - 550.  Also heard all kinds of nightmare stuff about them.  Canted sights (fixable?), bad barrels, bad alingment, ect. ect.

Also found a couple Century PAP types with a rail on the receiver.  That looks interesting.  Could maybe put a red dot on it.  Anyone have one of these?

Any and all help is appreciated.

AK47s are rare and expensive, you probably mean AKM.
The main differences between the AKM and AK-74 are the calibers, gas block angle, and muzzle threading.
AKM = 7.62x39, 45* gas block, and 14x1 muzzle threads
AK-74 = 5.45x39, 90* gas block, and 24x1.5 muzzle threads
Though the line blurred once the AK-100 series(and Saigas) was introduced because then you get the gas block and muzzle threads of the AK-74 regardless of the caliber.

The rail on the top of the dust cover on PAPs will shift too much for an optic to hold zero, it's a gimmick, but they are fine rifles.

WASRs are good rifles if you get one that isn't jacked. These are rifles you want to look at before you buy so you can check for canted sights, canted gas black, and excessive mag wobble.
A canted gas block and front sight can be fixed, but it's silly to buy a rifle you know needs to be fixed unless you are getting a discount because of it.

IMO the 2 best buys in the AK world right now are AMD65s on FEG receivers with original barrels and Saigas.

Thanks for the help.  I read the buyer's guide and that helped some too.  Probably going to drop a couple hundred more and go up a notch in quality.

Does anyone know anything about this????

I'm sure it's a decent rifle, but with the US made milled receiver I'm always a bit skeptical.

I would personally get an SLR-107F(R) if possible.

I am not familiar with Liberty Arms. Any particular reason you want a milled receiver over a stamped receiver?

In researching the AK47 from various sources on the internet, it seems a larger percentage believe milled is stronger, will last longer, and doesn't flex as much as a stamped receiver.  I have read others that say it's not true, but fewer people have said that in print.  (as least where I've been looking, ie. google)

There are 40 to 50 year old stamped AKs still in use in Afghanistan.
Some people say the milled receivers will last longer, but there is no evidence to support it, it's purely conjecture.
A stamped receiver AK will outlast you and weighs less than its milled counterpart.

It is possible.  Is there any known issues with Arsenal's stuff?

Just the price of their rifles.  I think there are a fair amount of people who don't like the cost.

In all seriousness though they're solid guns.  I did have the bolt carrier on my Arsenal crack within the first 500 rounds but from what I gather that is really rare and Arsenal wasted no time replacing it for me.  Also, from what I understand the SLR series rifles are considered the best of Arsenal's offerings.

... Probably going to drop a couple hundred more and go up a notch in quality.

I hate this fanboy stuff. Not everyone needs an Arsenal.

The man said he wanted to throw it in the truck and forget about it. If the WASR doesn't fit that bill, I'm the second coming and the beacon of light that the world is coming to an end. And I'm not.

Century gets a really bad wrap sheet if you ask me. I have two WASR 10/63s and they are both excellent. Both came in perfect condition, already sighted in and ready to go. Not a single issue ever out of them. I also have one of the C15 1970s M16A1s they did that is nothing less than spectacular. It was a mint 70s Colt for $600. What's not to LOVE about Century?

Well... they being the low tier vendor they are and using mostly surplus parts, do have duds. Their 1 year warranty is usually expired by the time most people get the gun because it starts from the day it was made, not the day it was purchased. So yes, that sucks. And yes people write all over the net about the problems they have. But, there are many, like me who get great guns cheap... that just go on about their day... so you only hear the odd n end bad story. It seems they all suck, when in reality, only some of them do.

You have to realize you are buying what is technically a USED weapon from Century, and are taking a GAMBLE. Gambling means, there is a risk. Either you are OK with that or you are not. Decide.

Then, to diss SOME of the complainers of bad rifles, I'll say I read on AR15.com, a full page diatribe of bitching about a WASR 10/63 and Century sucking to no end... all because... and get this.... there was a spot of rust on 1 of the 2 included magazines the size of a pencil eraser.

To me a WASR sounds perfect for you. Don't write it off just yet.. take a look at one, shoot one if you can... and if you still feel like blowing the extra $$ then by all means do. Some of the more expensive rifles really do deliver better quality. I'm just not convinced you need it to throw on top of a toolbox in your F150...

I tried to make it to the fun store today but it didn't work out.  Going to try it again tomorrow.  They have WASR's and a bunch of others, and yes a couple Arsenals.  I'll finger them all and decide.  I may not buy one tomorrow, but I'll examine several.

I made it to the gun shop yesterday.  He had several different varieties.  Cheapest was the WASR.  Priced at $650.  I was not impressed.  Had rust in several places on the two I handled.  I do realize that they are not going to win a beauty contest, but I'd rather put my own rust on them.  Next was the Yugo(?) PAPs.  $750.  These were miles ahead in quality.  The stocks were better, as was the metal.  After reading in several places that the rail shoots loose and optics won't hold their zero I had decided to pass on these.  Next he had another rifle, I think he said Chek, but when he said it wouldn't take standard mags, I passed on it.  Finally I looked at the Arsenal SLG 701.  He wanted $1150.  Obviously the Arsenal has the best fit and finish of the bunch.  I inquired if his prices were set in stone?  (I thought he was a little high)  He said yes, and that they will go up in price the closer it gets to November.  I passed on all rifles and thanked him for his time.

I came home and found an Arsenal 107F on gunbroker for $923 with free delivery.  I ordered that one  Then ordered 1000 rounds of Golden Tiger, 5 steel 30 round mags and 2 steel 40 round mags.  The bank account has taken a serious hit.

Thanks to all for all the help.
