Long story short..How can I tell a high end high dollar russian made ak from another AK47.  I assume the reciever is going to be milled and not stamped sheetmetal?  Also did the russians make a ak74?

please o please help me.  A guy is telling me he has a 47 and a 74 that are both russian and he needs money so I can buy both for 900.00 today.  I have a wasr but that's the extent of my AK knowledge.

Saigas are Russian, they could just be Saiga conversions. Just saying...

Russian AKs will have the name of the arsenal they came from on them, I.E. IZMASH, TULA, etc...

Russians make stamped AK's too.  They also make AK74's.

Sure fire way to tell if its Russian is the arsenal markings.  The trunion would either has a triangle with an arrow marked on it by the serial number or a star next to the serial number.  These markings can be faked easy enough to make a Russian clone, so this isn't 100%.  Also, if the side of the receiver says SAIGA really big, its Russian.  Not all Saigas have the arsenal markings on the trunion.

Just some things to look for.  If you can post close up pics we could easily tell you.

I will post pics as soon as I get them.  These are supposed to be old Russian AK's not Saigas.

If they are old I'd have to say he's bullshiting you or has no idea what he has and is calling them Russian who knows without pics

I bet its a Wasr who someone interpreted the Cigur symbol as that of Ishvesk. I've seen it before locally. Still, even two Wasrs for $900 is a good deal

I predict that these aren't Russian AKs at all.

+1. If anything kit builds with non-matching numbers more like it.

I can't get pics till late tonight.  I will post them asap. I would be happy with a decent ak74 the 47 is just a bonus.

Just found out the 47 is supposed to be Russian and the 74 is a polish.

The only factory Russian AKs are saigas or veprs. Saigas can vary from being woth less than a WASR if they're not converted, to $1000 for some of the newer SGLs from arsenal.

The "74" is probably a tantal kit build if it's polish. Some of these were made with out of spec US made barrels and keyhole. Some are a great option for 5.45x39. Shooting it first would be best.

Pictures would really help to determine what you're looking at. I'd agree that it's pretty unlikely both are not worth 900, but in the absolute worst case you could get screwed on both.

I know of no legal old Russian milled AK that would be available.  Unless it's a reweld from a demilled kit.

I'm betting on a Chinese MAK-90 type rifle with no 922(r) parts or a B-west receivered rifle with a stretched receiver and egged out axis pin holes and a Century Tantal with a keyholing barrel.  Then the OP will complain that he got screwed.

Research before buying and don't rush to spend money unless you know what you are getting.

OMG,  this guy is so full of shit.  The 74 is a century / polish side folder and the 47 is a wasr.

Nevermind fellas, sorry I wasted your time.  The guy told me they were both "old russian ak's"

DAMMIT !

That still isn't a terrible deal nowadays.  Let him know what he has and get him to knock the price down a few hundred if you can and pick them up anways.

I'd buy them....get him to adjust the price, and go from there.

I'm with everyone here that actually works in your favor, it was a good deal before just assuming they were what they are.  I would ask him to drop the price a bit giving him the actual information as to what they are.  If you push him too much it wont take him long to get on the internet and find out they are worth what he is asking and he is doing you a favor.
