Is it me or are AK74 parts kits getting harder to find?

All the kits are drying up.  Such is life.

That sucks, I just picked up a Bulgarian AK74 barrel!

RGuns has some Russian ones.  They cost about twice as much as the cut barrel Bulgarian kits cost.  Your Bulgarian barrel will work on Russian kits.

While not as plentiful as they were before, several places like Atlantic Firearms, RRC Firearms, Rguns and Apex still have 74 (or Tantal) parts kits.  The bigger problem right now seems to be finding original barrels.

If anyone really has their heart set on a particular rifle, now might be the time to buy it if you haven’t already.  I can possibly see a time a year or perhaps a couple years from now when both parts kits and finished rifles are even harder to find, and even more expensive.  I hope I’m incorrect about that, btw.

Even a few months ago the kits with no barrels were fairly plentiful. There were lots of the unfired Bulgarian kits around at about $200.

Yeah...I'm glad I built mine in 2006.

I'm considering buying a Krink kit from rguns before they're gone - $775 is absolutely outrageous though, especially with no barrel - I'm wondering if its even worth it.

Still, once they're gone, they're gone. And I don't plan on waiting around much longer to make a decision - once Obama gets re-elected, the shit is going to hit the fan and prices will skyrocket on the parts kits that are actually still available right now.

I picked up 2 romy g kits without cut barrels for 300$ shipped a few months ago, deals are still out there but hard to find.

I hear ya, but “outrageous” prices have a way of being time-relevant.

If you’re comparing the cost of the kit to what it was a few years ago, yeah…it’s outrageous.  But if you’re comparing the current price to what such a kit might cost five years from now, $775 could still be a screaming bargain.

Plus, you have to consider what the likelihood is on these kits being more available or more scare in the future.  While none of us have that crystal ball, my best guess would be that over longer periods of time, we’ll see fewer of these kits available.

I’d say that if you want it, just get it (assuming you can afford it without neglecting your other financial responsibilities.)  The worst case scenario would be that you overpaid for it by a few hundred bucks, and might take a loss of several hundred dollars if you ever needed to sell.  But if that happens, you can consider that loss your “rental fee” for having had the rifle for however many years you had and used it.  When people take a loss on a gun sale, they tend to discount the economic value of having owned and used the firearm for that period of time.  But really, I think the chances of losing money on it, over time, aren’t that great anyway.

BTW, I wonder how many of those kits Rguns has?  They’ve been saying “very limited quantity” or something like that for the better part of a year now.

Considering the Bulgarian krink kits with original barrels easily fetch $1,200 now, I'd say the $775 for an unfired Russian kit with no barrel isn't all that bad.

ehh parts kit shmarts kit. you can buy factory russian ak's right now for cryin out loud. an AK w/  factory receiver (built in Kalishnikov's factory no less) beats any parts kit build on a US receiver. also Id rather have a wasr then any romanian parts kit build. you think parts kits builds are going to be worth as much in resale value?

Some kit builds will be worth more than factory builds.  The reason is because you can't get every single type of AK in a factory build.

Yugo M92?  Parts kit only.  RPK74?  Parts kit only.  Yugo M85?  Parts kit only.  List goes on.

Some of those parts kits by themselves are already worth more than an Arsenal SGL rifles.

I love my SGL31.  But if I want a Russian AKM, AKS74U, or AK47 (milled).. parts kits are the only option.

It all depends on what you're looking for.

Yep, most of the collector ak's besides prebans are parts kit builds. There is a saying "real ak's are built" which is true to a certain group of people. However usually it's worth more to keep as a parts kit then build it up if all parts are there. Also arsenal's always have increased in value but you might have to wait awhile if it's a newer saiga one untell the next hott arsenal comes along.

you got a point there regarding specialty AK variants for collections. I can certainly appreciate the need for that!

Any idea o price of the m85s? I know they would not come with barrels but so what. As long as they are under 1million dollars I guess we would be doing good.

I remember pre-paying to be first in line for an unfired PMKMS kit from Global Trades for $199 back in 2001, now people are happy about $300 for Romanian kits w/o barrels. Yuck.

Yup bought a bunch of those kits from Global trades back in the day, as well as Bulgarian milled recievers cheap too.  In my opinion it's better to buy new rifles these days like saiga's and convert them, kits aren't worth it anymore.

Well, not worth it is a bit of a blanket statement. If your goal is to simply get an ak and go shoot than yes building it seems to be somewhat silly. However, if you are looking to get an ak from a certain place (IE East Germany, Egypt, or Yugo.) than building is a more legitimate option, I for one am looking forward to an m-92 yugo kit as the Archer pistol from IO inc never came to fruition...

I wish we'd get a shitload of Krinkov kits shipped into the US. I need to get one at an affordable price, lol.

I would buy kits and a receiver and never have the patience to have them built. I probally did this a dozen times over the years.

I got 10 or more parts kits over the years. Only 1 is worth less than what I paid, wish I had bought more. My unissued AK74 Bulgy kit from rapid fire was about $350 with the original barrel, now reconstructed in my garage into a beautiful rifle... works great with new Slidefire stock. I have one of rguns russky kits waiting to be assembled with E. German bbl...

To avoid the hassle, I would rather just have a Saiga converted.  Cheaper and you end up with a better end product.

Now that kit prices are high and without the original barrels you're probably right.
