[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Side rail question

I am really just getting into the AK and have a SA85M and want to place a red dot on it so I have been researching different mounts available. I see some AK's have a side rail but mine did not come with one. I was curious if I can add a side rail or does the rifle have to come from the factory with it? If they only come from the factory that way what brads do this?

It can be added. There are some that bolt on, and some that rivet on. Any AK builder worth a shit can do the work if you don't have the ability.

Finding a side rail that will work with your trunnion/rivets, and aligning it with the barrel/bore, takes a bit of work, but doable. Have you considered an Ultimak, Midwest Industries hand guards, or a TWS gen 2 dog leg?
