I was wondering if all sgl31s are made from saiga 5.45 conversions by arsenal, seem a little pricey just for a converted saiga.

They're really pretty reasonable when you figure in what it would cost to convert one. I recently converted a Saiga myself and wound up spending very close to what an SGL would cost. Even at that point, it wasn't as nice as an SGL because it didn't have the receiver dimples or bayonet lugs, and it has those extra holes in the receiver for the saiga trigger parts. It really is all about perspective. If I had the money I would buy the SGL, but I'd pick up a Saiga in a heartbeat if I found one at a good price.

So does that mean they are converted from saigas?

In a nutshell, but there are differences.

SGL's come front from Legion, which means no holes in the receiver.  If you price out changing out the front end, you will save money getting the SGL.

I have one conversion and 4 SGL's.  Guess the order that I bought them in.

The price isn't out of line actually, there are a lot of modifications to get a sporter into AK74M configuration

Basic conversion/Reuse parts where you can:
US furniture set $75
Tapco g2 FCG $35

= $105

Front End/full AK74 style conversion:

FSB  $45
Brake $30
Trigger guard $30
Gas block $20
HG retainer $15
Gas tube $15
1000m rear sight leaf $25
Bullet guide $25 (may not be required for a 5.45 rifle)

=$205
maybe less if you can find really really good deals, so think close to $300 in parts for a full AK100 or AK74 series conversion. And that's not counting any tools you might need to buy like drill bits, drill press maybe, a vice, mills and files for example, or the value of your own labor. Arsenal has done all the work for you using modern production AK74M parts (except the trigger guard which is still Bulgarian to my knowledge). In the case of the SGL31-94's side folders Arsenal has already installed the rare and expensive 5.5mm folding trunnion.

They aren't cheap but they compare very favorably against doing it yourself. Just like purevl2 I started with my own Saiga sporter conversions and ended up getting the Legions instead. It makes more sense from a collectors standpoint and it's not much more expensive than slapping the cheapest Bulgarian parts to get a purely functional shooter. To me it makes more sense to spend a couple extra bucks, save the time and labor and end up with something that should hold it's value better than a homemade conversion of unknown quality. I have complete faith in my handiwork but I probably wouldn't buy someone else's conversion sight unseen.

(But as always I think you learn a lot about the AK by doing at least one conversion, so I still recommend it for the experience)
