I just bought my first AK and am having trouble with it. The bolt carrier cycles manually but will not cycle after shooting a round. In fact it doesn't pull back at all after firing and is extremely difficult to pull the bolt carrier back after the round fires. Again, it cycles just fine manually and will eject shells without difficulty.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you release the magazine and have the safety off can you pull back on the charging handle freely and if you release it does the bolt close?

Yes I can pull the bolt carrier back and release it without issue. It acts normally unless its fired. Also when fired it doesn't eject the shell either but cycling manually works just fine.

What kind of ammo?

I would say ammo issue.  You got some other ammo you can try??

Will it manually extract and eject a live round if you work the carrier by hand??

Sounds like fired case expansion issue.

Clean the chamber really well, if that doesn't fix your problem then you may want to have the headspace checked, just in case.

almost sounds like the gas port could be plugged up. it is hard to pull back after pulling the trigger because you have to cock the hammer.

This sounds like an ammunition or headspace problem.
What cartridges were you shooting?
Have you examined the fired cases for signs of excessive pressure?

I think that it may be a bolt carrier issue. I switched out the bolt carrier from another rifle and it seems to manually feed better. Is that possible? Im going to try firing it tonight. I'll let you guys know. Thanks for the help.

Check to see if the hammer may be binding up on the carrier.Could be a FCG problem causing the carrier to bind up just enough on the hammer.

I switched out the bolt carrier group with another and it ran without a problem. What do you guys think the issue is? Should I just buy another bolt carrier?

Thanks for the input.

I'd compare the track for the operating lug on both carriers to see if there are obvious differences.
BTW: Did you try the carrier which seems to be the problem in the other rifle?
