Help a brother out.  Just picked up a Saiga 7.62X39 sporting rifle as a gift.  I hinted that I wanted an AK for the birthday and this is what I got.  Should I sale it to fund an Arsenal or should I send it off for the conversion.  If so, can anybody point me in the direction of a good AK smith.  I don't have the tools, experience or time to do it myself.  Thanks for the advice.

If you're going to pay someone to do the conversion work you are better off selling the Saiga and just getting the Arsenal.

Saiga conversions are only cost effective if you do the work yourself, or don't do a full conversion.

You guys are talking about just moving the pistol grip.  If he is comparing it to an Arsenal, he likely wants a full conversion.. and you can't do that with a drill and a dremel.

You are correct, I would need the full conversation.  Relocate trigger ass and pistol grip. Add bullet guide fill holes and refinish.  I don't know that I can take that on  right now.   Thanks for the comments.

That's all?  Do you want to change the handguard, gas tube, front sight base, and gas block?

What you described is the half conversion.

If you just want to do the back half, I say go for it.  You can knock it out in an hour or less.

As said, that is not the full conversion.
That's the easy stuff that can be done with minimal time and effort.

The rest of the conversion is for the gas and sight blocks, lower handguard, and possibly welding up the holes. This requires removing the old parts, either by cutting or drilling out the divots, installing new ones with pins, a handguard retainer, the top groove (and maybe the side grooves in the barrel depending on if the rifle has them). This is a bit of work, especially if you don't have a press for pushing the blocks on or off.

Full conversion (save welding up the hole)

I love it.  I am intimate with it now.  Sure I scratched and marred it up, but it's a shooter.  1K rounds and no so much as a hiccup.

Nice setup. What's the optic mount and does it have a cowitness feture?

I'd pack it up til ya got time to do the half conversion like you say, and get a second hand AK or even a newer cheaper one like arsenal etc. You'll just lose money selling it and you can get some nice guns for the 500-800$ range. I got a used krebs ktr 03s with some mags ace folding stock and a sig red dot for a bit of 600! worth every penny. Check out gun classifieds the thing about aks they are tough so second hand is a good option for these.
