Can just the lever that holds the gas block in place be bought by itself for a good shop to replace on an AK47?  Or must the whole rear sight area be purchased?

That lever actually only holds the gas tube in place. The gas block is the part at the front of the tube that is pinned to the barrel. Yes it could be replaced, it is two pieces, the pin with the flat on it that rotates, and the lever, which gives you the leverage to rotate it. You could install one yourself pretty easily with any press, or even possibly a bench vise used to squish the ends on it. As far as tracking down the parts, I'm really not sure how much luck you'd have doing that. It could be done, but the hardest part would be finding the parts.

There are two types of levers.
Milled receiver lever is wider than stamped receiver lever, and these are not interchangeable.
