I just bought a MAK 90 and I want to make it more practical as a "just in case" rifle. It's slant cut, and has already been upgraded with a wooden stock set. I was considering switching over to synthetic, but I'm not sure which sets will fit the slant cut reciever. Also, I'm afraid the blued finish will mar and corrode if I'm unable to clean it regularly. Can I apply Duracoat to the Bluing? I'd like to keep the upgrades between 150-200 dollars.

The wood stock is GTG, and the bluing will hold up just fine.  Neither of the things you mentioned is an upgrade.     Maybe put a red dot sight on the top if you are dead set on customizing it.

Duracoating it will make selling it much harder if you ever decide to. You can duracoat it later if it gets scratched up. I have 25+ year old Chinese rifles that show no signs of rust. A little CLP goes a long way.

I am not aware of any traditional stock other than Ironwood Designs that will fit slant cut MAK's.

I really like the Red Star Arms forged fire control group. The trigger feels great, and the parts will last many lifetimes. You will have to grind on the safety lever (the part that is inside the rifle) to install the RSA in a MAK, but it is my favorite modification.

Otherwise, I'd buy ammo. Lots of it. Yugo good.

Do not spray/refinish it out of fear that the finish will get damaged. Only do it if the finish is seriously damaged and needs it... even then I would consider leaving it alone. The finish will hold up fine. Wipe it down after you let anyone put their greasy hands on it and don't worry. I have one I have been handling and shooting since 1993 and it has not been babied- It look fine.

I always modify my safeties to be easier for me to manipulate.

Aside from that the only "upgrades" I think are handy are a light and a red dot. More than that is unnecessary.

Practical upgrades are ––- more ammo and magazines...

The blued Chinese finish is one of the finest ever applied to any AK's. Don't ruin it by spraying some crap-coat on it.
As mentioned above, IF the finish is ever in dire need of re-coating with something, then go do that. IMO nothing looks better than a nice crisp Norinco/PolyTech blueing job on an AK, except a nicely worn Norinco/PolyTech blueing job.
Sounds like you have the thumb-hole stock issue dealt with already. That's the only thing a MAK really NEEDS IMO (besides more bullets).

They already come with one of the best triggers money can buy... Um....? Can't think of anything else.

I have 4 MAK-90's (2 stamped, 2-milled) and aside from putting good stock sets on them, each one is pretty much completely stock.
I may do an UltiMak/Red-Dot setup and an ACE side-folder on one just to change it up a bit. But those are really the only things I can come up with.
