OK, i'm an AK newb and I know this question gets asked a lot.
But often people have a specific price range. How about an official "Best Bang For Buck" thread where people just give brief opinions of why and how much and where to get. Including custom makers if thats your opinion. So no price guide... what AK 47 and 74's do you think are the best bang for buck? Be nice to the newb. |

Depends on what you're looking for.
If you care only about function then get a WASR from a reputable vendor like AIM, Atlantic, or a "certified" one from Henderson. If you care about looks or want a "top of the line" then get a pre ban Norinco, Arsenal, or custom build. They will all function about the same no matter what you choose, the extra $ will get you better "fit and finish" and smoother feeling rifle if that's what you're looking for but not necessarily a better functioning or more accurate rifle. |
| Try to find an older WASR ('06 - '08). I had two that were manufactured from this period. They both had straight sights, were consistently accurate, and ran perfectly. One of them needed one side of the magwell clearanced to use Chinese mags, but other than that, they were both great rifles. Add a quality polymer WARSAW stock set and a longer sling (Russian). You will be a happy man. |

Please The Draco is 100% real deal. 100% Quality Cugir factory built. It's also an AK pistol and without making it a rifle it they are basically a toy at best. Only difference between it and a WASR is the FCG, gas piston, and pistol grip... nothing that really effects the quality. |

My vote is a Saiga. Can be had for $350. You can convert the thing in 30 min for @$75 then if you want to do the front end,you will have a gun equal to an SGL,but a few hundred cheaper. Just want to point out that the "few hundred cheaper" part is only accurate if you have the tools and the ability to do all the work yourself. This is also assuming they are going to convert it to the extent that the SGL's are converted (100%, not half ass) People don't tend to mention this when they tell people do just get a saiga and convert it. |

MAK-90 and the ugly Chinese thumbhole rifles all the way. All this time I thought that MAK-90s were "ugly Chinese thumbhole rifles"... MAK-90s are every bit as high quality as some of the rare or preban chinese AKs, they're just neutered. Depending on how much that matters to you, or how hard it is to fix, it can be a deal-breaker for some. I had a MAK-90 and sold it to buy a SAR-1 because it would have been too much work IMO to fully convert back (stock set, new FSB, thread barrel, gas block if you could ever find one, etc.) Later I did buy and convert an NHM-90, but that was more because it was a factory underfolder and a little more worth the effort. For just quality and functionality though, a MAK-90 cannot be beat for the price. |

I'm heading to The Nation's Gunshow in Chantilly, VA Sun to get my first AK. Was told on a post I placed to look for Darksun Surplus to purchase my AK from. |

I'd suggest an AMD-65 (from TGI); they can be had for around $400. They can be a good deal IF you get a good one. The one I got from Bud's was a TGI and the mag well was jacked beyond usable. It's going to need a receiver. So in my case I got a $415 parts kit |
