I'm looking to pick up a WASR AK47. I know they won't be top of the line, but if they are are free from canted sights or gas tubes, it should be good right?
I was going to buy one online at Henderson Defense Industries, but I don't want to mess around with shipping and FFL transfer and all that jazz. Plus, Cabelas has em for 499, fairly competitive. Are all WASR's outfitted with a Chrome bore? If they are, I will just inspect a few for the above mentioned defects and purchase it at Cabelas. If they are NOT all chrome bored, how do I tell? I'm going to be shooting corrosive ammo and I definitely want a chrome bore. Additionally, if you have any tips on inspecting the weapon, let me know! Thanks in advance for your help! |
As far as inspection...I don't know?....I personally inspected my WASR-10 before purchase....and once I get it home I notice it's a little crooked here and there..
However...really doesn't seem to effect it's function..and it's accurate....the sights were way off whack..and once I got the front sight all calibrated and adjusted in the post was fairly centered in adjustment. It does shoot very decently...far better than I had anticipated given the AK reputation for less than stellar accuracy. Seriously!!..I think the entire front end of the gun is a few degrees off to one side.. I've heard some newer production WASR-10's have US production barrels..and maybe ain't chrome-lined...mines just a few years old and I think it's Romulan original barrel with lots of chrome

All Wasr's have chrome barrels. Alot of confusion awhile ago as some places said US non-chrome, some said US chrome.
Deal is, all Wasr's now use NEW ROMANIAN CHROME barrels, not surplus chrone barrels. So one plus. But pretty much: yeah, see if stuff looks crooked and make sure the bold will work back and forth (I inspected one at a gunshow where it literally took a smack against a table to get the bolt to move.). The gas blocks on almost all seem to be a "wee" bit crooked, but not enough to cause performance problems. |

It is not only the front sight or gas tube that can be crooked. On the Romanian and most all AK's that start their life as a sheet the whole front end can end up crooked. The problem is the front trinion and the barrel ends up seting to one direction or another. This does not effect the accuracy or function of the rifle, only the sights end up hard to use. If you are going to pick one up make sure to look down the rifle from behind the stock to ensure everything is in a strait line. |
