Ran across an SAR1 in decent shape for sale today. Not beat up but has been shot some. What are these worth and what would be a good price on this?

Thanks.

What are they asking? If you had pics that would help but generally anything under $400 would be a steal as long as it's in good condition IMO. IIRC Ive seen them go for over $600 but I think the average  would be $500+/- if it's in great shape then more if it's a train wreck then less.

If I was buying I'd look in the $400-500 range, and $500 would be NIB. If it isn't straight, I know I can fix it, max I would pay is no more than $400. In the $300 range I'd jump on it no matter what.

Front sight is very close to being centered. Comes with 2 mags. Didn't have my glasses or a light so I couldn't look at the bore, etc. Kind of dirty but doesn't look abused. Might be able to get it for $400. Maybe a little less.

Why do I need this rifle?

.

Need has nothing to do with it.

The price sounds right.  You should buy this rifle because you want it.

Also SARs have the correct FSB with a hole already in place to install a detent plunger as well as being the correct barrel diameter to be able to thread it 1x14mm LH threads and install a muzzle device if you so choose.

You need this rifle for the same reason I do. It is an incredibly reliable rifle that needs no pampering.

WASR 10 is $440 from aimsurplus, I would rather have a SAR1 any day over a wasr. So anything around $440 would get me to buy a sar1.

$400 or under would be a good buy. They are great guns and the only thing mine needed was a barrel threading and a different FCG to eliminate trigger slap. I threw an ultimak and red dot on it and it shoots almost right on with my milled arsenal.

Talked me into it. Besides, I've wanted an AK with wood for a while and I really didn't want to put wood on my SLR-95. Picking it up tomorrow.

I have 4,000 rounds through mine and it is still going strong

Got it home and had a chance to look it over. Except for a few easily fixed things, it's in great condition. I'm happy with it. Sometimes you just have to say "I'll take it" and hope for the best.

You won't be sorry!  I love mine –– if SHTF and I could only grab one gun and run, the SAR -1 would likely be the one.

Now I'm going to have to be on the lookout for a Kobra sight.

Is SAR series even imported anymore? Only WASR converted guns these days? Man I miss the good ol' days of Century SAR for $279 from Aimsurplus.

SAR 1's are great.  Had mine for over 10 years now.

SAR's have not been imported since 2003.

Right at $400. Didn't want to dick around for a couple of dollars and lose it. I'm happy.

Has the pistol grip screw worked it's way loose?

One of the things that need to be fixed. Screw pulled through the grip and someone has put a washer on the screw. I have a new grip in the mail.

Get a Hogue grip for it, you will love it.

Bought mine used from a gunstore about six or so years ago for $300. At the time new WASR's were about $350. I'm very glad I went with the SAR-1. Check the market prices for a WASR. If you're matching that price, you're getting a good deal. The SAR-1 is more favorable because it doesn't have a butchered magazine well and is a true "dimpled" military receiver.

With that said, it was just a year or two ago that SGL-21's were selling online for $500.    If they were still at that price I'd steer you that way without hesitation. Beautiful guns, Russian-made receivers.

these SARs are undervalued.  Not sure how they go for less than $500 while people pay $700 for ban config hungarians.

.

Nothing to do with the function of the rifles.

It's because they are Romanians, and people think of the Romanian built AKs as the bottom of the ComBloc barrel.

Put an SA85M next to an SAR1.  One of them is going to have a much nicer finish than the other.

My SAR rifles are by far my most reliable shooters (including my ARSENAL rifles in that mix). Out of the box they have a Com-bloc utilitarian charm that most American shooters will never appreciate. However, they will dress up nicely. I have one that I bead blasted and dura-coated (careful to preserve the required markings) and then refinished the original wood in a kinda Russian Red (used a Mosin-Nagant for the color match). It came out super! Almost too pretty for an AK. At some point I will probably thread the barrel but I am a little scared of screwing it up somehow.
