I got a very rough AMD-65 for cheap and refinished it. I'm putting it back together but the shepards hook is a different shape from other AK's and I can't fit it in. Traditional diagrams don't help. BTW, it's a Century build. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Are there improved aftermarket ones that would fit this model?

Throw away away the shepards hook and put in a Retaining plate and don't look back. You can get the from AK-Builder.com, Red Star,  Kreb's, and possibley several other places. They cost @ $10.00.

Is it the L shaped wire? If so, the long end goes under the hammer pin, the wire goes over the trigger pin and the loop on the short end goes around the end of the selector.
Simple to install, but remember that the tab on the selector often wipes the right leg of the hammer/trigger spring off the trigger when you install the selector.

+1

I much prefer these over the plate type.

I had an L shaped one, and still found the plates better

I don't have any trouble with the "Shepard's Hook" wire retainer, but then I've always put the fcg in the way it's supposed to be installed. Trying to put the "hook" in last rather than first is a guaranteed path to frustration.

I got it figured out. The Hungarian shepards hook is totally different fron the other AKs. It is actually very easy to put in once you figure  it out. It is shaped like a bent in L with a loop on the long end. Install trigger group and hammer assembly first. Slide in the shepards hook with the bent leg forward and up against the hammer pin. Lay the long section down to capture the trigger pin. Insert the safety bar into the receiver and through the back loop of the hook. I used a false cross pin to hold the hook in place while I slipped the safety through the loop.

POLYTHENEPAM had it exactly right. I just couln't get it straight in my mind, before the lightbulb lit up. Thanks Pam .

That is a great diagram. I wish we had more of that kind of help on this forum.
